About Mary

Mary's passion for music started at the young age of 7, begging her Mom to let her have music lessons. Since that time, Mary has played in over 15 orchestras, sang in 10 choirs, performed in countless concerts, and received state and regional recognition and awards. Mary received a Bachelor of Musical Arts in Music in 2019 from the University of Nebraska, Lincoln.

Mary is passionate about performing and teaching, leading to the formation of Dowd Music Studios in 2013. Instruments offered are piano, violin, viola, and voice. For lessons quotes, please contact (concealed information) for more information.

An active part of her community, Mary is also part of the Lincoln Music Teachers Association (LMTA), the Nebraska Music Teachers Associations (NMTA), and is also a Music Outreach Program (MOP) Teacher.

The thing I enjoy the most about teaching is seeing the light bulb moment light up a child's eyes. Whether it be in lessons learning about how theory connects music together, or learning how to play their instrument better, there are few things more satisfying than that. Seeing a child progress not just as a musician, but also as a person is a beautiful, wonderful thing.

I started teaching seven years ago when I noticed that certain kiddos responded better to one-on-one instruction than classroom instruction.

I have a degree in music from the University of Nebraska, Lincoln. During my time there, I played in many ensembles and on many instruments, mainly viola, violin, piano, and voice. I have over 25 years worth of experience in music.

I have also striven to continue learning outside of school by pursuing pedagogical resources. The teachers organizations I am a part of offers many workshops and resources for continuing pegagogical training. I have attended many workshops, read books, and actively worked on implementing teaching techniques in weekly lessons.

About the lesson

First, I assess what current abilities and knowledge a student has. I have had transfer students and adults restart lessons and it is important to give the appropriate music suited for their ability level. For new students, I start with basic note reading and ear training/listening activities. You will always have something to practice throughout the week, even if you're a beginner student.

Second, we explore how good technique can influence sound quality and general enjoyment.

Third, I outline what we have learned in lesson and what the student needs to practice daily before our next lesson.

I have worked with students from the ages of 5-adult, all with varying abilities. I have worked closely with several ADHD students as well as autistic students.

Hire someone who is teaching what you want to learn. Although there are many fabulous teachers, if your personalities don't mesh well or if you aren't getting what you want out of lessons, it's time for a re-evaluation.

Watching one of my students wanting to teach their sibling because they enjoyed lessons so much is exactly what music is about, sharing your joy through music with others.
