About Peter

As a young musician myself, I strive to make the process of learning music fun and fulfilling for students. This means that I always listen to the student's goals and desires and shape my teaching style accordingly. If a student wants only a casual musical experience, then I can absolutely provide that. However, as an experienced classical pianist and singer, winner of numerous local, statewide, and international piano competitions, and Yale University music major, I also have the capabilities to provide a rigorous musical training for students of all abilities.

I have loved music for my entire life, and one of my favorite things to do is share this passion. When I see a student become as excited about music as I am, it fills me with gratification knowing that I have enriched this student's life. I am confident that music helps make the world a better place, so sharing it brings me a great amount of joy.

I have studied classical piano for 16 years and voice for 5 years. In addition to classical music, I also have experience working with performers in musical theater and am an avid choral singer. I am continuing my music education as a music major at Yale University.

When working with a new student, I first enjoy talking with them to see what their musical interests and goals are. Then, I will typically do some warmup exercises with them to evaluate their technical progress and then have them play any pieces they may be working on. This gives me a good introduction to the student both as a person and as a musician, allowing me to shape my teaching style accordingly.

I typically work with younger children and beginners. However, I do have experience working with more advanced singers in the context of musical theater.

Try to have a decent idea of what you want to accomplish with your musical pursuit, as this will help me make our lessons more fulfilling and enjoyable. Also, it is typically helpful for me if you bring certain pieces or styles you would like to work on rather than me searching for pieces for you to learn, as this makes sure that you will enjoy what you are working on.

In February of 2020, I performed the Mozart Requiem with the Yale Glee Club. Performing this monumental piece was a challenging and fulfilling musical experience and a highlight of my choral singing career. Additionally, in the fall of 2019, I assistant music directed the Yale University production of the musical Sweeney Todd. I helped teach actors their songs and gave them vocal coachings as well as played keyboard in the pit orchestra. This was also a very rewarding experience that combined my interests in piano and singing.

A few things worth thinking about before reaching out
Students should consider what they want to get out of learning a musical instrument and think of some specific goals for themselves (e.g. playing a specific style of music, a certain piece of music, etc.). This will allow the teacher to create a more customized learning experience for the student which will be much more gratiftying.
