About Brian
I have been teaching piano, voice, and organ for over 10 years, and have experience with students from 5 to 75. I especially enjoy teaching teenagers and adults students, whether they are advanced and need professional performance coaching, are total beginners, or are returning to music after several years away.
I have a degree in music performance and pedagogy from Dordt University with an emphasis in piano and organ.
I also hold a degree in Piano Pedagogy from Grand Valley State University, where I studied with Helen Marlais, author of the Succeeding at the Piano method books.
My vocal experience comes from singing in the Grand Rapids (Michigan) symphony and opera choruses, teaching voice lessons in numerous studios throughout Michigan and Minnesota, and directing many amateur and professional musical theatre productions.

I have a trial lesson with each student in which I assess musical experience and aptitude, learn a bit about personality and temperament, and design a course of study tailored to the student.
I use piano method books, but adapt frequently with supplemental material as I learn more about the student. Each student is unique, so each curriculum should be unique.
I have worked with students from age 4 to age 74. I've taught beginners of all ages who have never touched an instrument, adults returning to singing or playing after many years away, and award-winning piano and voice students who've won concerto competitions and been awarded college scholarships.

In the 10 years my daughter has been taking lessons, we have moved around a bit and she has had 4 different teachers, and I have to say, Brian is the absolute BEST teacher we have ever worked with!
He is so in tuned with the student and not only builds in them an amazing love for music, but he drives their passion! By working with them and encouraging them, he brings out the best in their ability as well as builds their confidence and joy in playing.
I cannot tell you enough how much Brian has meant to our daughter these past several months, but I can tell you that not only has her desire to progress come back, but her love of the piano has taken new heights.
If you have a serious piano student and you're looking for the most inspiring and truly passionate teacher, Brian is your guy. I promise, you will see your child rise to new heights you never imagined possible.Brian is an exceptional piano teacher. My son has thrived under his teaching. He is good at focusing on all aspects of playing the piano: not just hitting the right notes, but also musicality and techniques for hand and body movement to enhance the playing experience. He’s also a great communicator with a calm, relaxed demeanor that allows him to challenge my son without inducing stress. I highly recommend him!
Brian has been teaching piano to our young elementary children for a few years now; he is fabulous! Brian is patient, positive, and so knowledgeable. He is flexible and willing to try new techniques to keep our son and daughter engaged and loving the piano. Our children love going to piano lessons and I know this is truly because of the amazing teacher they have. We can't sing his praises enough! =)
I took lessons from Brian De Young several years ago when he worked in Michigan. It was such a wonderful and helpful experience! Brian is very devoted to his students. His enthusiasm for what he does overflows into his students. He greatly helped me excel in my piano skill. I would definitely recommend him!
Brian is extremely competent, good with kids, flexible, and communicative. Highly recommended!
Brian is patient and tailors the lessons to the ability of the student, such as finding supplemental material to enforce key concepts that the student has opportunities in.
I am a senior adult and long time piano teacher myself. A year ago I decided to up my game and asked Brian if he’d take me in as a student. In really appreciate Brian’s knowledge of music history and repertoire. He’s a gifted musician and teacher. He has so much experience and many creative ideas to help me grow as a musician myself. He’s kind and understanding, while challenging me to do more and be better. I am one satisfied customer!
