About Devona
I have been teaching piano off and on since I was 16 years old. When most kids were working fast food jobs, I was at home teaching piano. At the age of 6, I began taking piano lessons. By age 12 I was playing piano for my church and by age 14 I was taking lessons at Converse College School of Music. Since that time I have been teaching privately and playing for churches, ensembles, weddings, funerals and at various other venues.
Over the years I have held office management positions which prevented me from teaching full time. However, my love for music and playing has not diminished. I believe anyone can learn to play if that is the desire of their heart.
Come and see for yourself just how fun and fulfilling piano can be!
It gives me a chance to give back to my community! We need more pianists in our world. There are so many avenues to pursue!
I had four years of training at Converse Pre-College School of Music, now known as the Lawson Academy for the Arts. I trained under the founder, Alia Lawson. (Does that make me old? ☺️)
I have played for voice students as well as instrumentalists in their tryouts for various schools of music.
I have played for the churches of which I have been a member over the years since the age of 12.
I am also a fairly accomplished organist.

New students will receive one hour of instruction for the price of 1/2 hour on the first visit. I feel it is just too taxing to get to know a student, explain my teaching method, introduce basic facts about a piano, provide a demonstration of my ability to play piano to prove I am the "real deal," and introduce the first week's lesson in only 30 minutes. It isn't fair to get started only to have the student excited and have to go home.
After the first lesson, I review each week until the student can feel comfortable about how he/she needs to learn and process the basics of piano.
I use John W. Schaum's Piano Course for the main lesson book. We advance at the speed in which each student learns. It truly does not matter the pace at which we learn as long as we are moving forward.
Parents are encouraged to talk to their student to discover excitement or even fear about piano lessons. The worst thing a parent can do is force a child to play. Not every child/instructor relationship is compatible. That is perfectly fine. I have an open door policy and the goal is to find a good fit for the child.
Adults are also highly encouraged to take lessons. No one is too old! A child must be able to read and write some to take lessons. Usually age 6 or 7 is preferable but there are always exceptions to any given rule.
