About Joel
I have a fair amount of "real world" experience, and also believe first and foremost in instilling a love of learning and a love of the process to a student. I have clear methods/exercises in order to explain concepts clearly, and additionally try to keep a consistent and reasonable sense of expectation. Additionally, I have a reasonable rate for lessons ($40 per hour), which can be negotiated to an extent depending on a person's needs.
I enjoy the overall process of learning the science behind music, and being able to explain it clearly and effectively to somebody else. The process of teaching is one which is a two-way street in terms of growth-the student will naturally learn a great deal, but the teacher will also grow significantly simply by developing the ability to articulate his/her concept or approach to something. I enjoy doing this simply due to a love of the process, and of learning in general.
A fellow musician asked me to teach at a private music school which he directs. Have also taught informally with less experienced peers.
Hold a Bachelor's Degree in Music Performance, am currently working on Master's Degree (Portland State University). Have studied music with Dave Liebman, George Colligan, Marina Albero, and others.

I generally like to assess where they are currently at by asking them several questions about the material/subject until they reach a point that they do not yet know. From there, I will begin the process, asking the student to come back with the new material ready by the next session. I will also continually quiz the student regarding the material throughout the duration of his/her study, in order that the material is solidly known and not forgotten. Additionally, I have several worksheets for various musical concepts- some are quite specific (exercises and what not), while others delve into more abstract/conceptual ideas.
Have worked primarily with beginning/intermediate level students. Have additionally taught informally with less experienced peers.
Look for somebody who can explain concepts clearly, as well as somebody who is clear about/remains consistent with expectations. Additionally, look for somebody who is patient but who is also not "fluffy" and who expects homework done before each session.
The endowment of a research/excellency award for musician/professor George Colligan- George is truly one of the most creative and most knowledgeable musicians within jazz/improvised music today, and his teaching at Portland State, University of Manitoba, Julliard, and as a guest clinician throughout Europe and the U.S has greatly opened up the door to finding an artistic voice for many young musicians today.
A few things worth thinking about before reaching out
Students should simply ask questions about anything which they do not yet know solidly- however, it should be expected that there will be no "quick answers".
