About TERRENCE

I am passionate about my work. I love imparting knowledge and skill to my students. I want the best for them. Every person is different, I try to assess the best way to teach my students and then tailor a long term plan for gradual growth towards a desired musical goal.

I like seeing the growth and confidence spiral upward and outward in every individual that I teach .

I have a B.A. degree in music from Columbia University. I have been performing and teaching music professionally for 35+ years. I have classroom experience in public and private schools. I currently am studying to be Certified as a Music Teacher in the State of New York.

I love teaching in person and online. Assessing a students skill level , choosing a course of to take and using the genre that the students will learn is all very exciting to me.

Nothing gives me greater satisfaction than sharing my gift and knowledge of music and helping students achieve their musical goals. i have had many students go on to be professional musicians and music teachers.

When a student or parent makes the choice to go with me , they are getting some one who has been a performing and teaching musician for decades . I graduated from Columbia University with a degree in music, was taught piano by William Beller, a piano instructor at the Juilliard School of Music and received Jazz Piano instruction from Mike Longo , who himself was taught by Oscar Peterson

About the lesson

Typically I like to teach my beginning students a few songs by ear . This gets them interested in the piano and gives them confidence to see that they can play. I then introduce them to one of the method books that I use. There are many but I like John Schaum. I also start them from the very beginning with music theory worksheets to give them a better understanding of what they are learning.

Technology being what it is I use a number of music apps as well as YouTube videos to buttress what they are already learning in class from me. All in all , I try to make learning fun and exciting !
