About Tamara
I specialize in working with grade school children and young learners. My background is in music education and I spent seven years as an elementary music teacher before teaching private piano and voice lessons full time. I view each child as a unique individual and tailor my instruction according to their interests, learning style, and goals.
I know it sounds cheesy, but sharing what I love (music) with others! I also love that learning an instrument teaches so many other life skills. My hope is that even if my students don't go on to be musicians that they leave my studio having developed confidence, independence, and discipline all while developing a lifelong love and appreciation for music.
It's sometime I've always done. I taught elementary music and took on some private students for a little extra income when I was single. I loved it so much that I knew I wanted to do it full time! It's so fun working one-on-one with kids who are really interested in something I love.
I hold a Bachelor of Music in Music Education from Westminster Choir College. I taught general music to grades K-7 for seven years before leaving to teach privately full-time. While I was still in the classroom I taught a handful of private students on the side. For nearly 4 years now I've taught privately and have consitantly kept a roster of about 40 students.

I offer a free trial lesson for all prospective students. If the child is young, I will use this time to assess the child's readiness and determine which curriculum or level is best for them. I will also spend time getting to know a student's interests and understand why they want to learn an instrument.
I've work with all ages but my favorite is school age, anyone from 4-18. I've also worked with students autism, behavior disorders, adhd, and the visually impaired.
A few things worth thinking about before reaching out
Think about your interests and what you want to learn and communicate this with your teacher from the very beginning. A good teacher has a wealth of knowledge that they can share, but a great teacher can take what you love and use it to help you learn. If you want to learn how to play songs you hear on the radio, best make sure you find a teacher who is open to this and not going to stick you down a path of only classical music or vice versa.

When my son turned 5 he said he wanted to learn piano. I reached out to a couple teachers who all said that was too young, but Miss Tamara seemed knew exactly how to keep him excited. Now my son is 7 and is thriving. I'm so thankful Miss Tamara had the patience to work with him so young!
My teen daughter took piano for several years with another teacher before we found Tamara. When she started studying with Tamara, I saw her get excited about piano for the first time. Tamara took the time to get to know what type of music my daughter likes and helped her understand concepts she struggled on with her previous teacher. It's such a change to see her actually looking forward to her lessons instead of dreading them!
