About Harrison
I've learned from the very best.
My teachers have been named to the Order of Canada (Andre Laplante), been a finalist for the National Book Award (Jenny Xie), won a Pulitzer prize (Elizabeth Frank), and had a composition played in honor of the 2020 Presidential inauguration (Joan Tower). Their pedagogical lineages trace back to John Ashbery, Franz Liszt and Beethoven.
I’m honored by this rich tradition and feel indebted to pass this wisdom down to my students.
I’m inspired when my students see something in themselves that they didn’t know was there. I love helping them develop the discipline to fulfill that potential.
My degrees:
B.M. in piano performance from Bard College Conservatory
B.A. in written arts from Bard College
A.R.C.T. from the Royal Conservatory of Music
My teachers:
Poetry studies under Jenny Xie and Michael Ives
Electronic music studies under Matthew Sargent
Analog synthesizer studies under Dani Dobkin
Composition studies with Joan Tower
Classical voice studies with Ilka LoMonaco
Film scoring studies with Mark Baechle
Principal piano studies with Arshalouise Nersessian, Amy Yang, and Blair McMillen
Additional piano studies with Andre Laplante, Yohaved Kaplinsky and John Perry

A few things worth thinking about before reaching out
A few things are essential:
What’s the teacher’s artistic range? If a student is enthralled by something new, can the teacher encourage that growth?
What’s the teacher’s artistic experience outside of teaching? Can the teacher demonstrate how this art applies in the real world?

Let me start by saying that one is never too old to learn or relearn the piano.
During the dreary days of Covid lockdown, Harrison answered my request to rekindle my love of this instrument. My decades-old basic Grade 5 Royal Conservatory ability had Harrison digging deep for ideas. I was impressed at his simple presentation of a wide and inviting array of instruction. With every weekly lesson, he found new ways to spark my interest, increase my love of playing, build my skills and inspire me to go further. From a review of sight-reading, simple scale techniques and music theory, to allowing me to choose the pieces I wanted to learn, Harrison creatively built our one-hour Zoom sessions into an experience that I looked forward to every week. He encouraged my strong ear for music, helping me understand that it too, is critically important in playing. His diverse knowledge and unique instructional talents in teaching piano have nudged me back to enjoying practising and playing. With these solid learning sessions, I have a bevy of tunes under my belt, including a new grasp of jazz piano - something I've always wanted to try! My confidence in my ability to read music has strengthened and I am inspired to learn more pieces on my own, to compose a little and to play more often.
Harrison is a gifted instructor with a masterful piano background. No matter what your age or ability, your piano learning is guaranteed to be a positive, diverse, enjoyable journey with Harrison as your instructor.I came to know Harrison when he worked at Bard Prep, both as a collaborative pianist and teacher. In addition to being a fantastic musician, he has a wonderful rapport and clear understanding of how to inspire children musically. Many of our Bard Prep students and parents raved about the quality of his playing and instruction. His enthusiasm, dedication, and professionalism is second to none.
Thank you Harrison for great virtual
lessons in music composition. It was
creative and the final music video set
to music they composed illustrative of
the fun you had. My son thoroughly
enjoyed it. The virtual option also
allowed him to participate in the camp
with his cousin in England that he
otherwise wouldn't have seen this
summer. Thank you!No words can adequately describe how highly I value the humanity, creativity and artistry of Harrison Jarvis.
I’ve known Harrison for almost a decade since, before his enrollment at Bard, he would travel monthly from Toronto to Philadelphia for piano lessons with me. His heartfelt commitment to the study and performance of piano repertoire have made indelible impressions upon listeners across North America and Europe. Not only is Harrison a poet at the keyboard, his intuitive talents in written arts, composing, and singing make him one of the most exciting artists to watch. In his teaching, he has that rare ability to spread infectious joy while artfully shaping his immense knowledge to deepen his students’ curiosity. Above all, it is Harrison’s generosity, humility, and honor for the people and art around him that make his presence unforgettable.
We are so lucky that someone as passionate and committed as he is leading us into a better future. His creative enterprise to serve his community through music is exactly what we all need to stay engaged and inspired during this pandemic!

Harrison is a joyful, patient and responsible teacher who has in depth knowledge and ample experience in music. What more can you ask?
I believe having a high level degree in music does not mean he or she can teach others. However, I was amazed how my 5 year old son was exposed to a variety of music elements. My son was able to play and touch his grand piano like our electric piano at home. I found some other alternatives we had explored in the past were very strict and very teacher oriented but Harrison made the environment pleasant and exciting. My son was encouraged to recognize different rhythms, sound and melody and looked forward to class every week.
I strongly recommend Harrison, he is head and shoulders above the rest. We are so lucky to have Harrison for our son's first music teacher. My son started piano/music lessons 3 months ago with Harrison. We had tried in the past at a local piano school, but it didn’t go very well; after a couple of lessons, my son wasn’t interested in going anymore.
We were somehow hesitant to reintroduce music lessons again, but what a difference Harrison made. Now it’s amazing to us that our son simply cannot wait to go to his lessons every week. Harrison did a wonderful job at making sessions interesting for him. He is able to connect with my son and make lessons fun for him. Harrison is creative, passionate about music and genuinely dedicated. My son is very happy and always excited to go.
Thank you for contributing to his musical education and enhancing his music experience.
As a previously performing artist, with training from the Mannes College of Music in 1999, I was introduced to Harrison in 2019 after receiving keyboard technique and performance suggestions from previous Art School students at Bard College in New York. On many occasions Harrison has given me technical instructions and broader musical concepts that continue to sharpen and improve my musicianship. I admire Harrison's open and welcoming outlook and his critiques and comments are circumspect and far-reaching. His familiarity with the repertoire, his musical training and experience, and his desire for truer musical and artistic interpretation creates a wonderfully productive 'meeting of the minds' every time we meet, for which I am very grateful. Harrison is insightful and his precise comments add depth and also a higher realization for artistic potential, both physically and mentally, which ultimately creates a richer musical experience when it comes to performance. It is a joy and privilege to work artistically with Harrison. I hope to continue journeying through the classical repertoire in this manner, it has been such a glorious and fruitful pursuit.
