About Cherise

I have a passion for music and for helping others learn and grow. I utilize my background in childhood development and pedagogy to help me create a space where we can learn!

We learn by doing and I am big on showing the "why" and not just the "how". I offer tools and absolutely love watching my students accomplish what they once thought they could never do!

I started teaching music as a way to exchange my time and knowledge for grocery money. I was so happy to discover that I enjoyed teaching piano lessons, and that it felt very natural to me. I soon developed a sense that I was able to offer a lot to my students and they to me.

All of my piano education has occured in private lessons which began at the age of 5 and continued into adulthood. I have been involved in a number of musical groups including bands, orchestras, choirs and ensembles with various instruments since the age of 11. Piano has been constant.

Learning is perpetual for me. I am currently working with a highly qualified and experienced teacher, and am in the process of certifying with MTNA.

About the lesson

When I sit down with someone for the first time, I try to understand what they want to accomplish with piano lessons. What do they want to be able to do? How much time are they willing to spend practicing each day?

I also share what I do and what I can offer, and together we decide if it's a good fit.

I have worked with people ages 4, 58 and everywhere in between. Most of my students have been between the ages of 6 and 15. Some come to me with previous experience, and others are brand new to the piano. All find growth and increase their skills at the piano.

Be prepared to spend some time finding the right teacher. Interviewing more than one is a good idea. Spending some time thinking about exactly what you want to accomplish in lessons will help you make a good choice.

With this in mind, interview prospective teachers and learn what their goals are for you. After learning all you can, go with your gut.

Recently, two of my students who are sisters were able to play a lovely duet together. They have been working on it for at least 2 months and it sounded heavenly. I enjoyed seeing that they were working together and felt a connection. It made me feel very good to help bring people closer through music.

A few things worth thinking about before reaching out
Keep it simple, but here is a long list of questions. Choose those that can help you develop your sense of what you want:

How much time can you spend practicing every day? What do you want to be able to do? What style of music are you interested in playing? Who do you want to play for? (maybe yourself) Are you interesting in composing? Performing? Competing? Understanding theory better? Another thing to consider is your budget.

Will the teacher you are interviewing support you in your goals? How much time will they want you to spend on the piano every day? What are their strengths? Can they help you get where you want? What do they charge? Do they offer opportunites to perform or play with others?

Learning the piano is like learning another language. It takes time, repetition and discipline. And just like any language, learning it can bring so much joy and connection. I believe it's worth it!

Details

Typical lessons in my studio are $20 for a half hour lesson.

Lesson prices are between $15-$40 per lesson depending on the length of the lesson and location. How long a lesson is will be determined by student readiness and desire. Very young children in my studio might not benefit from anything longer than a 15-20 minute lesson, whereas some older students may want an hour.

I travel to homes and a studio space at Instrumental Music Center in East Tucson for an additional charge.
