About Dudley

I am a very supportive, patient, and encouraging tutor ... and a *very clear explainer*. (One of my students once suddenly asked "Are you over-simplifying this?" "No, why?" "Because I can understand it!"). I can show you the common sense behind the mathematics so that you will never forget it.

I have a BA in Mathematics from UC Berkeley. I have been tutoring since 1980 for all kinds of subjects in Math, Computer Science, and Physics, at all levels, and have hundreds of satistifed clients who have done well in their classes, tests, and even careers with my help. Since 1991 I have been a writer, editor, and math accuracy checker on scores of math textbooks for a dozen publishers.

And I have a side career in the arts, so if you're a "non-math", "non-science" person, I can help you discover that not only can you *do* math, you can also *enjoy* it!

I love math and science myself and I enjoy communicating that feeling to my students. Especially if I have a student who is fearful of the subject or has a very low opinion of their own ability, it feels wonderful to help that student discove how well they can actually do, and how much fun it is.

I once had a student who contacted me with more hopelessness in her voice than I had ever heard before: "I don't even know what this course is about!" She was a business major and only had to take one computer science course to graduate. She had waited until her last semester ... and the only class at a time she could take was an unusually difficult one ... and the book the class used was one of the hardest that even I, a Mathematics major, had ever seen! But I was able to show her what it was about and how to do the problems in the first couple of chapters ... and she wound up getting the second-highest score in the class and switching to a Computer Science major.

I can't take credit for her, because she turned out to have a natural talent for it and was a hard worker. But I felt very proud of having started her in the right direction.

About the lesson

First I will ask the student what they are having trouble with and what they think they need to work on ... and then I will observe them working to see what else they need.

When a student asks a question, I'm very good at recognizing "where the question comes from" -- exactly what it is that the student doesn't know.

Every student needs to work in a different way. Some students need lots of real-life examples, some are very visual and are helped by pictures, some like to know "what's behind" the math (and I especially like showing that), some need to have me model all the steps for getting the answer. I try to find the best way to teach evey student.
