About Swapnil

Hi! My name is Swapnil. I am a lawyer during the week and a tutor in my free time. I graduated from Boston University’s Questrom School of Business with a degree in Finance and Business Law in 2017, and I graduated from Boston College Law School in 2020. I’ve been tutoring students in different subjects throughout high school, college, and law school over the past ten years. My goal is always to have the student learn the subject well enough that they can teach it to someone else. I do this by making sure my students understand the underlying concepts behind each problem we do so that they can apply them to any other problem moving forward. I ensure that no student leaves confused and that we don’t move on from a topic until they fully understand it. I encourage questions and create a welcoming atmosphere that allows students to open up about what they need help with.

I worked as a tutor at Kumon Learning Center in high school, helping students with math up to Algebra 2. I also tutored students in college and law school as a Teaching Assistant and on a volunteer basis.

About the lesson

I first talk with the student and get to know them so that we can have a friendly environment. I then identify the areas that the student is struggling with and begin to work through a few practice problems. I use the Socratic method, which enables the student to work through the problems with guidance rather than solving the problem for them. The student is free to ask questions the entire time. Afterwards, we'll do a few additional practice problems so that they can fully master the concept. We'll return to it at a later time to ensure they don't forget when we move on to a new topic.

I have worked with students ranging from the ages of 5-25 of all backgrounds and ethnicities.

Find a teacher who understands your learning style and doesn't try to impose their own. Everyone learns differently, and the best teachers are the ones who cater to the students' strengths.

I had one student who was having difficulty with word problems. They knew the math and the formulas, but they had trouble mapping it out, causing them to get questions wrong. I realized the student is not a visual learner and cannot picture the scenarios in their head. Instead, they liked using numbers and symbols. So, I worked with the student to develop a strategy that worked. We broke up the prompt into individual sentences and wrote a formula for the first. Then, after each sentence, we would update the formula until we got to the end. This worked like a charm, and the student's scores improved dramatically. Seeing their face every time they solved a word problem was amazing, as this was something they never thought they would be able to master.
