With over 20 years experience diving in Monterey, I enjoy sharing my knowledge of the ocean and our environment with new divers. Hopefully, I can help reduce pollution and the negative impacts of industrial agriculture and fishing on the ocean. Each persons individual choices matter. Diving is a way to see the beauty of the world around us and hopefully want to preserve what we have for furture generations.

About the lesson

Typically, we will schedule a time to meet at a local coffee shop to answer questions about learning to dive, plan class dates/times and complete the necessary registration forms. Most PADI courses have 3 components (Class, Pool, Ocean). We will discuss the requires for each of these. The typical order for completion is Class (mostly independent study), Pool, then Ocean.

For beginner level courses, complete gear rental is available. No required scuba gear purchases.

From ages 10 to over 75 years old, I'm happy to work with those who are ready to discover the undersea world and learn to scuba dive. I have trained many people from beginner level to instructor level. By keeping my class sizes small, I can taylor the class to your needs and goals.

For learning to scuba dive, the experience of the instructor and the size of the class are extremely important. You get what you pay for. Larger classes typically will mean to lower price, but at the cost of diver safety and the quality of your underwater experience (less time exploring during your 1st ocean dives, less visibility due to excessive new divers in the class, ...).

I have over 25 years teaching new divers. I have seen the evolution in dive training practises and training methods. I have trained more than 1000 divers. I dive the Monterey area on a regular basis even when I am not teaching.

You can meet me before you begin the class so you are not learning to dive from a stranger.

In January 2018, I had a grey whale swim up to me while diving in Monterey. The whale was just swimming past and came within about 10 feet of me to say, "Hi". I was diving on my Hollis Prism 2 rebreather.

On a recent night dive, I could hear the whales singing underwater. We were in the middle of a school of anchoives while hearing the whales. The whales could have been close or further away. Amazing experience!

A few things worth thinking about before reaching out
Does the instructor teaching the class have more than 1000 dives in the local area?

Has the instructor teaching the class been teaching scuba diving more than 5 years?

What is the maximum class size? If the other places talks about student to instructor ratio, is this achieved by simply adding inexperienced staff to the class?

For the ocean dives, how much time is dedicated to exploring and how much is conducting skills on the bottom?

How much time is spent waiting on the surface before or after the dive?

Private Classes (week day) start at $1200 for 1 person for the PADI Open Water Diver Course, or $800 per person for 3 or more divers

Group Classes (weekend only) - $825 per person
