About Roberta

Sewing can be one of the most satisfying activities in the world! With it you can make just about anything! Patience is important for both the student and instructor. I remind students that they couldn't run when they stood up the first time so I don't want them to be too hard on themselves when everything doesn't go right the first time.

I remind them when they've done something right, even if it's a do-over, and explain why it's important for their finished product and satisfaction with it!

Let's do this sewing thing! I think you'll love it. I know I do!

About the lesson

First meeting: We meet at a fabric store and look through easy patterns from reliable pattern makers that I know to be food for beginners. Next we look at fabrics, notions such as elastic, buttons, thread for the pattern they choose and purchase those. I also recommend buying pins, needles--for both hand sewing and machine sewing, etc., so they can begin to sew.

After that I ask them to preshrink the material the bought, and have it ironed and carefully iron the pattern so we can cut their project out at our first lesson.

When we get to the next lesson I show them how to use the pattern cutting guide and cut the pattern out. I also give them lessons on their sewing machine for basic aspects of sewing.

NEXT WE SEW!!!

If students have never sewn before I have an exercise or two for them to sew so they get the feel of working the pressure foot, stopping, turning corners, sewing curves, etc.

I take them through the pattern step-by-step to make sure the process is clear and have them follow instructions. Gentle corrections and explanations are given as needed. It's important that the student learn how to use the iron as the fabric requires, too. I share techniques so they're successful.

We proceed in this fashion until they have their first project complete. If it's okay with my student, I'd like to take their picture so I have a memory of all those I've worked with.

For students with some experience and want to learn more advanced techniques I take them through more subject-specific lessons, such as making button holes, etc.

I like to go step by step so students have a solid foundation and develop confidence as they go. I can also teach students how to adapt patterns to their body type and size, and techniques to make any adaptations as they go.
