About Mary Ann

I have been sewing professionally for over 20+ years at costume shops all over the Northeast US and building custom costumes and clothing for private clients. I have also worked at several universty theatre costume shops in the mid/northeast Pennsylvania.

My teaching style is very realxed and low-stress. I don't believe in stupid questions. A stupid question is just information that I need to relay to you, my student.

I have a BFA and MFA in theatrical costume design and costruction. Over the past twenty-plus years I have worked with many different brands, styles, and types of machines. Some of these machines include Brother, Husqvarna Viking, Bernina, Singer, and Janome home machines, industrial sewing machines that have 1/3 horsepower motors, and both home and industrial sergers/overlock machines.

So, if you want to learn how to use your new machine, how to put in a zipper in a garment, or a more complicated project like a corset or jacket, I can help you. Please note that in my experience a 2 hour lesson is best.

As part of my Master's program, I needed to teach an Intro to Costuming class. Since then, I have taught university level classes and simple one-on-one lessons.

I have a B.F.A and M.F.A. in theatrical costume design. These were highly focused tracks of study where I learned everything from basic sewing skills to tailoring techniques.

About the lesson

I establish their amount of experience, inexperience, and knowledge base. This helps me determine how to approach teaching each student. From there, depending on the type of questions asked, I give/show the student the answer and sometimes I have them think the answer through before giving the answer.

I've worked with students who didn't know how to sew on a button to more experienced sewists who just needed a little help figuring out a project.

Look at what kind of experience they have, not just how long they have been sewing. The instructor's experience will determine whether you learn just the basics or the basics plus some tips and tricks.

Details

I charge $20 per hour and most teaching sessions run about 2 hours. So, most sessions will run $40. If the session runs longer, I charge either the portion of the hour or up to the full hour.

An initial "sewing 101" type session will run 2 hours ($40)

Project sessions start at 3 hours ($60).
