About Lisa

I have been sewing for over twenty years, beginning as a tailor for a family-owned dry cleaning company in Whittier, CA. I believe if you go by the book (or in this case, pattern) you can create a masterpiece! I sew costumes, formals, and outerwear from my home in Long Beach, CA. Lessons learned can be applied to everyday shopping experiences as you will learn to discern between quality stitching and poorly-constructed garments.

I was inspired by a friend who wished her mother had taught her so I taught her and she said I would make an excellent teacher. That was a few years ago, by word of mouth.

I took a few courses of graphic design which helps me visualize how fabrics will look when applied to various parts of a pattern. While I was employed as a tailor, I learned to apply zippers, replace linings in tailored jackets and skirts, take up hems, and patch holes. I taught myself how to sew prom dresses, formals, bridesmaid dresses, and wedding dresses.

About the lesson

I ask each student what their end goal is and a little about their learning style. Together, we go over a few patterns I have on hand to familiarize my students with terminology and procedure. We also read the manual for their sewing machine to familiarize student with their machine. Then we go to a local craft store where my student will pick a pattern and learn to choose material, thread, and notions such as zippers and/or buttons appropriate for their chosen project. We will lay out, pin, and cut pattern which is about 75% of every sewing project I have ever made. At this point, I show students how to thread their machine, load a bobbin with thread, and set stitch length and tension up. Tips and no-no's are also important so I encourage my students to take notes but I also have a short pamphlet with guidelines, suggestions, and references. My goal for my students is for them to be comfortable with experimenting after their final lesson.

I find that most of my students have been women ages 25-40. They seem to be the most enthusiast about learning this life skill. My youngest student was a middle-school neighbor who wanted to be a fashion designer. I've also taught a grandmother of four who's first project was footed pjs for them all. As far as learning styles go, I'm very patient and can cater a lesson to my students needs.

I would be specific in search engines. For example: Sewing instructor wanted for dress to wear at formal company dinner. OR: Wanted! Sewing instructor for life skills!

My 5-year old grandson went to Comic-Con wearing the Dr. Strange cape I made especially for him and he got asked for his autograph! He sleeps with it on sometimes.

A few things worth thinking about before reaching out
I would ask a potential teacher what their specialty is because if you're going to sew a blanket, you won't need a teacher who usually sews wedding dresses. Of course, they can certainly teach you everything you need to know but if you find one who specializes in your desired project, you may only need a few lessons. Formals take time. I would also ask if this teacher brings their own supplies and scraps, if they need to purchase their own, and if provided by the teacher is it included in the hourly/daily rate quoted?
