About Janet

I specialize in online and one-on-oe lessons in needlepoint for stitchers at all levels and all ages. From your very first project to expert consultation on canvases that are perplexing you (even just small things), I can make your needlepoint sing with inventive ideas & techniques that are easy to do.

My online classes and projects provide creative designs & tons of information in an easy-to-use format.

I have been doing needlepoint since in 1970 (in my early teens) and I am a pioneer in making needlepoint available on the internet. My free beginning needlepoint class has been taught to thousands of stitchers.

I write two needlepoint blogs that are updated daily, one the largest repository of free needlepoint information in the world and needlepoint's leading blog ((concealed information)

In the print world, I have written 13 books and am working on my new book.

Needlepoint is one of the easiest and most creative crafts around. It can be stitched and enjoyed as a meditative but creative pursuit by anyone. I'll help you with your needlepoint questions, problems, and wishes with my comprehensive knowledge & friendly style.

I love so many things about needlepoint. As the daughter of an artist & granddaughter of an expert seamstress, I love that needlepoint lets me express my creativity easily, even though I cannot draw.

I'm crazy about threads and stitches so I love that through needlepoint I can use so many of these to create a great effect. I love how relaxing and meditative needlepoint can be and how portable it is! I can take my stitching to appointments, on planes, on car trips and I can relax in spite of what is around me.

I have found such joy in stitching and in trying new things in my needlepoint that I love sharing them with others in every way I can.

I have long wanted to share my love of needlepoint with others. In 1995 I was given the opportunity to be the first needlepoint guide for what is now The Spruce.

As I wrote weekly columns, developed content, and built a needlepoint community, I realized that good and effective tools for beginning and intermediate stitchers just weren't out there and that there was a vested interest in the needlepoint establishment to keep in place the perception of needleppoint as expensive, exclusive, and difficult.

That's just plain wrong.

Once I realized this I began developing new techniques that were easy ways to do expert techniques, projects, and classes for these neglected stitchers.

Initially, I taught shopowners these techniques but I found that by reaching out online and in print to those stitchers not served by local shops I could reach a wider audience.

The delight folks get at finding needlepoint that is affordable, unfussy, and easy to do has inspired me to grow this work.

I have been stitching for almost 50 years and writing and teaching about needlepoint for 25 of those.

I've taken or taught many workshops and classes for everyone from beginners to needlepoint shop owners.

I am a Life Patron of the American Needlepoint Guild and have served chapters in several positions. Nationally I am Chairman of one of their distance learning programs.

About the lesson

I customize my help to what the student wants. In person we work together, often using my extensive stash of threads, canvases, & books to find the right stitch for a project or to learn needlepoint and Bargello. Online I provide answers to questions, online classes, stitch guides and other projects. I'll help with problems and answering questions every step of the way.

I have taught needlepoint to all ages from children about 10 to retirees. I particularly love teaching adults in their 20's and 30's to introduce them to needlepoint & how it can easily fit into a busy life.

Look for someone who can meet you where you are. If you find a teacher insisting that you MUST stitch a certain way, do certain kinds of projects, or use certain threads -- run! You're almost certainly going to get a view of needlepoint that is limited at best.

Needlepoint can accommodate any taste and any budget. Even with limited resources, you can create beautiful and unique projects. Find a teacher that will help you do this.

I stitch constantly and so I have many pieces stored that I have stitched but not turned into anything. In reorganizing stuff recently, I found these boxes of items. It's been such a joy to find these old treasures, remember stitching them. I'm now finishing many of them to get them out into the world.

Details

Face-to-face lessons and consultations begin at $50/hour. Students are charged based on time spent (I'm generous in figuring this) and billed to the nearest quarter-hour. There is a $25 minimum for these sessions.

Online classes vary in price depending on the offering. These prices are in my Etsy shop ((concealed information)

Stitch guides (guides for how to stitch a specific painted canvas) start at $65. Price quotes for stitch guides are always free.
