About Nicholas

I work with students who strive to learn songs they love, in whatever genre that lies in, so I don't teach theory. You tell me what you'd like to play, and we go for it. My goal is to get you to the point where you are playing music on your own comfortably and you don't need lessons anymore.

I specialize in:

-Songwriting

-Harmonica

-Finger picking (specifically Piedmont Blues, Country Blues, All Forms of Folk, Travis-Style Picking, and Old Time) though I can learn virtually any genre.

-Singing

I had a few friends who were interested in lessons, and when I would take breaks from touring I had the time to invest in helping them learn songs they desired to learn. It all just grew from there and now I do online lessons regularly when I'm traveling.

I've been playing music for 17 years, 12 of those years professionally. I've toured around the United States, Western Europe and the UK. My experience & knowledge has all been gained first-hand, hands-on.

1) What do you want to get out of these lessons? Play for friends, play for yourself, perform open mics or shows?

2) What kind of music are you looking to learn? Specific artists, songs, genres.

3) Where are you in your process? Just starting out, play a little here and there, know basic chords, intermediate, advanced?

4) First lesson is for me to gauge where you're at, to begin the process of learning the structure needed to attain the desired goal. Homework begins!

5) After fundamentals are learned, repetition x10! Homework.

6) When repetition is comfortable and consistent, we move on to playing along to songs we want to learn. Homework.

7) Focus is now to move away from playing with the song, to re-creating the song. Homework.

8) Practice and repetition of song until it becomes second-nature. Homework.

9) Repeat process for other songs/genres or become content with the foundation and begin to play on your own.

I've worked with several demographics and genres. Kids who want to learn classic rock or hard rock, middle aged folks who want to learn reggae and old folk music, to older gentlemen who want to learn Dave Matthews Band and blues. I've also worked with people writing their own songs, helping them hone in on their craft and be comfortable playing their songs to the public or recording them.

Be eager to learn what you love, so much so that you should be practicing what I teach you between lessons. I always want students that get better with each lesson, not because of what I am giving, but because of what they take away and do on their own. I'm not a hard-nosed teacher, I use positive reinforcement and I like to have fun with the process!

I just spend 11 years performing under the moniker "Whetherman" that took me to 10 countries, recording eight albums, and seven nationwide tours. The amount of incredible experiences I gained under that project, the knowledge of music business and touring, is unmatchable. The best times of my life! I've recently transitioned into my full given name as the music is changing, and it was time for a new project.
