About Cody

Cody Stover has been singing since the 1990's, and has studied intensely to be a master teacher of vocal technique and musicianship. He holds a Bachelor of Music in Vocal Music Education from UNLV and has spent the past 3 years teaching music in the Clark County School District. He has specialized training in teaching music to children; however, he has experience working with singers of all age levels. His warm personality, cheerful demeanor, and insistence on using tried-and-true teaching techniques result in a satisfying lesson experience that puts the student's comfort and learning needs first. Students can expect to improve not only their singing technique but their understanding of and command over general music skills, including reading and writing music, regardless of whether they are just starting out or are more experienced and are looking to brush up on their skill set.

Music is something that belongs to all of us, and singing is one of the most primal, fundamental ways we can get in touch with our musical selves. Whether it's in the car to our favorite radio tunes, at a birthday gathering to honor the special day of a friend or family member, or at a baseball game, singing is something that we can all share in together, and it has always been my belief that singing is a unique outlet that builds the self and the community like few other things can -- not to mention the myriad of physical and mental health benefits that come with singing regularly, whether alone or with others. Teaching this art form is a sacred privilege that I take very seriously and that I go about with the utmost zeal and earnest, and I hope that I can inspire my students to enjoy music and singing as much as I do!

I have wanted to teach music since I was in middle school. I was inspired by the incredible music teachers in CCSD who took me under their wing and taught me everything I ever wanted to know about singing and making authentic, meaningful music, for myself, and for and with others. I was hired to teach music by the same school district that taught me, as soon as I graduated from college. I haven't looked back!

Mr. Stover has a long history of mentoring colleagues and taking on leadership positions throughout his musical career. He holds a B.M. in Music Education from UNLV, is Orff-Schulwerk Level II certified, and has 3 years of classroom teaching experience in general music and choir.

About the lesson

Together we will assess the areas of interest, experience, and ability level of the student, and what we would specifically like to accomplish in terms of skill, technique, and repertoire. We will set out long-term and short-term goals, and decide on what music we are going to work on to add to the student's personal repertoire.

I have experience teaching singers of all ages and ability levels; however, my most recent experiences have been largely with the K-5 age group.

Make sure that your personalities mesh well and that your prospective teacher is coming from a place of empathy and understanding -- the voice, in particular, is a very personal instrument, and student and teacher must both be willing to communicate in an open, honest, and positive manner to ensure that the vocal instrument is being nurtured in an encouraging and healthy way!

I recently had the privilege of singing Carl Orff's "Carmina Burana" in the Las Vegas Master Singers with the Las Vegas Philharmonic and the UNLV Dance Department at the Smith Center. Not only did I have the remarkable privilege of being selected to sing a solo sextet within the work, I also selected and coached 5 of my own students to sing in a children's choir for the same performance!
