Balancing between artistic expression and vocal stability can be pretty tricky. Whether you're a Broadway veteran or a shower-singer, it's important to instill a technique that capitalizes on the longevity of your instrument. As with any athlete, training the correct physiological structures and encouraging healthy use allows the student to safely engage and capitalize on their own vocal production--we cannot create if we don't protect our instrument.

I have a master's degree in Musical Theatre and Voice Pedagogy from New York University. There, I studied and researched the anatomy and physiology of how we produce sound. Proper techniques and exercises engage our anatomical structures, allowing them to work in tandem to ensure a safe production. Mindfully and healthily releasing sound allows us to capitalize on the optimal use of the voice. When singing at optimum level, performers are able to capitalize on emotional, engaging storytelling while working less.

Studying under Dr. Brian Gill and Jeremy Aye (both of whom studied with world renowned pedagogues, Johan Sundburg and Barbara Doscher) my approach to singing is built around two primary factors--breath energy and resonance. As both breath energy and resonance can be viscerally measured, the physical data and research proves that with proper equilibrium, one can create a consistent, safe and individualized sound and style.

Meeting new students is one of the most exciting moments of my job. Hearing someone's voice for the first time is really like opening a gift. I have no idea what to expect, and I'm always surprised and intrigued by the human voice.

We are artists. While we all use the same instrument to create sound, the idea that our instrument is our body makes the process that much more personal. It's this individuality that gives us all unique styles and interpretations, but it's also why singing is such a vulnerable task.

It's important to remember that although I'm teaching, I'm still a learner, performer and human being--experiencing the same emotions alongside the students I teach. We are all in the boat together, bettering ourselves along the way.

Not only is he able to technically work your voice, but he also is able to coach and contextualize each piece. He enables you to take the concepts we're working on in vocal exercises into the songs. Ive never had a teacher that was able to really explain what was happening with my voice.
