About Joy

I enjoy hearing improvement in my student's voices!

I hold a BA in Music and Secondary Education and an MM in Choral Conducting. I have performed with various ensembles in the Hampton Roads and Philadelphia, including the Virginia Symphony Orchestra Chorus, the I. Sherman Greene Chorale, Temple University Choirs, Temple University Graduate Conductors Chorus, and Temple University Recital Chorus. I had the honor of singing the National Anthem at Chesapeake City Parks' 9/11 Commemorative Ceremony (2021). I have sung with various churches including Great Bridge Presbyterian Church where I directed the choir and traveled to Italy on a choir mission trip. I had the amazing opportunity to perform and conduct in Italy and conduct a choir from Virginia Wesleyan at the MLK Jr. Memorial in Washington, DC. I have performed as a soloist at various churches, events, and concerts, some namely with the I. Sherman Greene Chorale (2021-2022), for An Evening of Bach at Virginia Wesleyan University, and for two Crowns concerts. I currently sing on the worship team at Victory Life Church.

About the lesson

When I am with a new student, I start by learning about them and their goals for taking lessons. After, I will check their range, do a few warm ups and then find an easy song to start them with to further hear the range of their voice and any things we can work on. It's a mock lesson, basically. It let's the student know how our future lessons will be structured, though, of course, the lesson may change time to time according to the individual student.

I have worked with young singers, ages 11 and under, who were either beginner singers or singers with some choral and musical theater experience. I have also worked with adults who want to keep their voice up and those who wanted help to project and prepare their voices for singing live music.

I would say to make sure you have a goal in mind. That helps you and your future teacher know how to cater their lessons to you. Make sure you research possible teachers and see if many of your goals and interests match with their experience.

I sang for a Crowns concert in May with three other beautiful, African American female singers from the Hampton Roads area. Norfolk State University created the first Crowns concert. It is a concert that includes the storytelling of Black women and their history with church hats. Intermingled with the stories are sung spirituals. Many spirituals are arranged and have been arranged to be sung in concerts. I sang two pieces, Ride Up in the Chariot (arr. Betty Jackson King) and Come Down Angels (arr. Undine Smith Moore), and had the absolute honor of hearing women, only one who I've sung with many times before, present their spirituals with warmth, with expression, and with their own uniqueness brought by their God-given voices. It was such a fulfilling concert!

A few things worth thinking about before reaching out
I would say the main thing for me is to know what your goal is. This will help your teacher cater lessons to your specific needs and wants. That way you get so much more out of your lessons.
