About Stephanie

Stephanie Michaels is Instructor of Voice and Lecturer and recipient of the Golden Plume Teaching Award at Oakland University in Rochester, Michigan; Artistic Director of Ignite! Productions; and a frequent musical and educational contributor to programming at Temple Israel in West Bloomfield, Michigan.

An actor/singer/director/musician, Stephanie has over twenty years’ experience in opera, music, theatre, and film including the national tour of The Music of Andrew Lloyd Webber. Stephanie has taught at the secondary school and university levels in Michigan for over fifteen years. She studied acting and music at Interlochen Arts Academy (H.S. Diploma), The Juilliard School (Bachelor of Music), Manhattan School of Music (Master of Music studies), and studied education and theatre at Southeastern Oklahoma State University (Master of Education - Curriculum & Instruction - Theatre Pedagogy). Stephanie was trained in Somatic VoiceworkTM Certification Level I, II & III, Estill Voice Training Level I & II, at the OBERLIN Institute of Vocal Performance Pedagogy, and worked with leaders in the field at the HAL PRINCE Professional Musical Theatre Workshop. Stephanie has trained in diversity and equitable teaching practices at Columbia University: Inclusive Teaching, Supporting All Students in The College Classroom, Massachusetts Institute of Technology: Becoming a More Equitable Educator: Mindsets and Practices, in addition to coursework toward this goal in her M.Ed. Stephanie's students have gone on to pursue training at the most elite institutions in the country and professional careers on Broadway, on national tour, with cruise lines, theatres around the country, and internationally. Stephanie's approach focuses heavily on fostering inspiration, confidence-building, and artistic purpose in addition to nurturing the many technical and musical skills required in the performing arts.

About the lesson

In the first lesson, I would like to do some vocal warm-up exercises and start to hear the student's voice just through basic vowel sounds. Then we may work on a song or two and see what our goals will be as we begin improving vocal technique.
