About Nathan
I not only tutor students in the subjects they want to learn, I also teach them how to learn using multimodal learning. Kinesthetic, visual, and autitory learners all do well with the methods I employ. The more ways students can get a concept into their heads, the more likely they are to remember it.
I have been an educator for my entire career, starting as a school counselor. I've taught videography for the past 7 years, and recently started teaching social studies and science for 6th graders. I love working with this age group because they are at the begining of creating an identity for themselves, but they already have a lot of skills to work with, so their ability to learn is truly impressive.
I'm passionate about finding ways to make history fun and relevant to kids today. I help them identify not only the people and dates that are a part of the story, but also the motivations that drove historical figures to do what they did. These are the same human motivations that drive each of us today in our every day lives. When kids can connect to motivations behind historic events, they start to love the stories, and studying feels less like work, and more like catching up on a favorite novel or tv show.

I was a school counselor for 7 years. I taught classroom guidance and saw children for a variety of challenges including accademic ones. I began creating videos to help with more common issues and they were very effective. This lead me to pursue videography and I began teaching children through adults how to create their own videos and movies at Arlington Independent Media, the local public access TV and Radio station.

I find out from them or from the parent what they would like to learn through our tutoring sessions. Whether the student is an adult or a child, I ask about their interests, their most successful learning experiences, and the most challenging ones. This helps me taylor my instruction. If there is a teacher, I contact the teacher with permission of the student or parent. This allows me to stay up to date with assignments and activities in the class that I am tutoring for.
I then create a SMART goal with the parent, if applicable, and student. Goals should be specific, measurable, achievable, realistic, and time bound. This gives us a specific date to evalute the success of our tutoring sessions and the student, or parent, can make an informed decision about whether to proceed.
Currently, I work with sixth graders at Spring Hill Elementary School in Fairfax Virginia. I have also spent a year teaching high school students in social studies and video production at Blair High School in Montgomery County. More recently, I have been at Arlington Independent Media teaching videography to children and adults of all ages.
If you are struggling with social studies, you want to find a teacher who can make the stories come to life and make them interesting to you. If you want to learn more about videography, look for a teacher who can help you tell a story, because without a story, there's nothing to film.
I recently led a group of high school students in creating a documentary about the oldest house in Arlington, The Ball Sellers House Documentary. (concealed information)
I got thirty applications for three spots and was able to pick an awesome crew. They were quick to pick up the concepts of storytelling and videography, and they applied these concepts through a lot of hard work and reaching out to people for interviews and historical help on the documentary. They worked through creative differences, which always led to a better solution than any one of them could have come up with on their own.
A few things worth thinking about before reaching out
1. Why do you want extra instruction in the subject for which you are hiring a tutor?
2. How much work are you willing and able to put in to practice what you are learning through tutoring?
3. If you have a regular teacher, what will the teacher add that you can't get in the classroom?
