About Ioana

Hi, my name is Ioana Nicolai.

I'm an Italian tutor but I also lived in Spain for about 15 years before coming to the US. I've been tutoring since 2007/2008 and in different countries all around Europe. Teaching Spanish is one of my favorite things to do. I love this language which I believe to be very sweet and romantic. I've been helping students of all ages to improve their Spanish skills through books, readings or games depending on the students age or needs.

I always loved to teach. My love for communication is unstoppable. I started in Barcelona, Spain. I was teaching Italian. It really got me in after the 1st session. I still enjoy sharing my skills with others and I adore Spanish as a language so teaching it comes very natural to me.

I studied languages at the University La Sapienza in Rome, Italy. And have many years of experience with people from different countries and background. (France, Italy, Spain, England, Germany, Portugal, and since 2012, Los Angeles, California).

About the lesson

First evaluation to understand the strengths and the opportunities in order to move on with the process. Then, it's mostly conversation and grammar, special focus on the pronunciation. Every session is especially designed to meet the needs and goals of every student. We can read some stories and go deep into the understanding of the reading. We would paraphrase in order to improve the vocabulary and practice gaining more confidence while speaking. We would also practice listening by different accents and playing games that can help with processing this information.

I've worked with any ages. From kids to adults makes no difference to me. I help everyone who needs or wants to speak Spanish or Italian for any reason.

Make sure the teacher understands that learning a new language is exhausting! There has to be some easiness that comes through games or funny moments! It's about been professional but also adapting to every single situation and student.

I had a student in LA that wanted to learn Italian. We became very close and she was able to go to Italy and felt very happy she was able to communicate with the locals. Unfortunately, this person passed due to cancer. I will never forget her and her enthusiasm. That's what pushes me everyday.

A few things worth thinking about before reaching out
What my goal is?
What do I want to use Spanish for?
Is it for a trip to a Latin country only or am I really interested in learning?
Do I want to do it for work?
Is it personal improvement?
