About Melissa
Hello! My name is Melissa. I have a Masters in Special Education and a degree in Elementary Education. I have worked as a general education teacher, special education teacher, gifted teacher and behavior specialist. Throughout my career journey I have participated in multiple trainings, specifically in reading and math curriculums to help struggling students make more progress. I have worked with students from all different backgrounds and levels. I have taught students AD(H)D, dyslexia, autism and other learning delays.
As a teacher I worked with large and small groups, as well as individually. I find the 1:1 time the most rewarding as the lesson can be tailored to that exact student. I engage students through making personal connections to build a trusting relationship. I take the time to get to know them and understand their likes and dislikes. While working with them I observe exactly what they know and where they need to go next. We often play games and read interesting books to make learning more meaningful and fun. I also communicate with parents and guardians to understand their goals to ensure they are getting what they want as well!
I use a wide range of assessment tools when beginning with a student and throughout my time with them. Most often they don’t even know they are being assessed since I turn most activities into games or other informal activities. This prevents any test anxiety and ensures I have accurate data. I take specific notes during my sessions about successes and any errors they made. These notes will then help direct my future instruction with them so we move in the right direction!
I love working with kids and helping them reach their fullest potential. I take pride in the depth of knowledge I have about learning and use this knowledge to help kids grow! I am easy to reach, and always respond promptly. Contact me today to schedule your first session!
