About Kari

Hello! My name is Kari Tarter and I am a certified special education teacher for students with mild-moderate disabilities in grades K-12. I am currently enrolled as a graduate student to recieve my Master's in Special Education: Severe and Multiple Disabilities as well. I am from a military family and spent most of my childhood attending international schools in Southeast Asia. My family eventually settled in the Montana area where most of the extended family still resides. I have been working in the Special Education: Mild-Moderate setting since the start of 2018, with a focus on working with students that have emotional and behavioral disabilities. Since enrolling in my Master's, I have also taken a keen interest in working with children who have autism and sensory processing difficulties.

I started off nannying as a teenager and just happened to have many clients with disabilities. From there, I enrolled in university to study special education and never looked back; presenting new information and teaching concepts to people gives me a sense of purpose. In working with students with disabilities, I find them teaching me as well.

I like to consult with the family first to discuss expectations, scheduling, and pricing. Then, it's all about getting to know the new student and building a rapport. I love to individualize my lessons so that they are guided by the interests of the student. It's important that I build a relationship of trust and authenticity with them before academic progress is made. Once I get an idea of the student's interests, hobbies, and strengths, we can start tackling areas of struggle. I like to administer a brief pre-test to the student to get an idea of what the focus should be on for upcoming sessions. Then we go from there!

I worked as a paraprofessional for students with emotional and behavioral disabilities in grades K-2. During my student teaching, I worked with middle school students in the resource setting. Once I earned my degree, I worked as a lead teacher for a classroom of students with emotional and behavioral disabilities in grades 3-5.

You can have expectations of your teacher too! I appreciate when students tell me what they need, like, and dislike during teaching sessions.

Last year I tasked my students to make panorama models of their favorite landmarks that they had learned about in our geography unit. The students had to get super creative as they were all stuck at home for remote learning. The diversity of their projects was so beautiful and they were all super encouraging with each other as they showed off their creations on zoom. The best part was when they were allowed to come back in-person and brought their models in. We laid them out in the center of the room to create a lovely miniature city. I was so proud of them!

A few things worth thinking about before reaching out
1. Have I thought about what the answer COULD be?

2. Have I thought about where I may find the answer?

3. Could a peer buddy help me through this instead?
