About Yichen

I provide research and statistic tutoring from both acdemic and practical point of views. I am passionate and patient, and I can teach in both English and Chinese.

I enjoy helping my students to achieve what they want to achieve. I also enjoy guiding students to love research/statistics (or at least not hate them).

I have an innate interest in teaching long before I enrolled in a PhD program. I started as a teaching assistant for a professor at Baruch College, where I learned the fundamentals of teaching. Ever since that experience, I started seeking teaching opportunities and tried to identify what helps students the most. 



I can teach behavioral science related research and statistics perfectly fine. I am an adjunct professor and a PhD student in I/O Psychology at Hofstra University. I have more than four years of experience training, teaching, and learning research methods and statistics.

I generally start with a mutual understanding with my students. While I hope all of my students to fully grasp what I can possibly teach them, my students might only need a boost in a specific area. As such, I always start from a mutual understanding of goals, then a learning environment that both of us are comfortable with. Typically, such an environment would include error encouragement (where making mistakes is perfectly fine and encouraged), psychological safety, and intrinsic motivation. 



I have experience as a TA where I tutored students one-on-one, and I also have experence teaching more than 20 students in a small lecture room. With my experience, I mostly taught students in undergraduate level. 



Statistics can be difficult to teach because the knowledge difference between the learner and teacher can create unnecessary obstacles in the learning process. This is especially the case in an online setting. As such, I would recommend two types of tutor for this area: a tutor who just started tutoring(e.g. me) who is passionate in this line of work, or someone doing this for decades with great teaching experiences. Both types can overcome the aforementioned obstacles. 



The COVID-19 situation really showed us that it is absolutely important for instructors to deeply care and encourage his/her students, and I am willing to assist my students in anyway I can. 



A few things worth thinking about before reaching out
What do they really need and be as specific as possible. I found quite a few students like to ask their professor/TA for a range of concepts. For example, a true story, a student asked me: "I'm not sure what chapter 3 is talking about". Questions like this make the teaching process difficult because the teacher cannot quickly identify where the confusion raises from. I started going over the entire chapter with that student from the beginning, only to quickly loose his attention; it turned out that he understood the beginning part fine. While he was not focusing on our conversation, we went over the part he was really confused about. It was a waste of time for both of us. He could just asked "I am not sure what the definition really meant, and why is it important". Things like this happen a lot, and I understand that it could be difficult to find out what one really needs. As such, I encourage students to think through what they really need and be as specific as possible, and then leave the rest to me.
