About Mark

I've trained in over a dozen martial arts over the years - krav maga, taekwondo, muay thai, tai chi to name a few - and at my school we focus on bringing the most effective techniques and practices from each to develop an array of practical self-defense techniques.

We also have a strong emphasis on fitness and injury-prevention, with practice methods designed to emulate realistic self-defense situations in a safe environment. Our 6am, noon, and 6:30pm adult classes each weekday give a wide variety of choices to fit into your schedule.

Watching students grow stronger and more confident, more able and self-aware, more coordinated and self-controlled - there's nothing else like it.

I graduated from Gonzaga with a degree in computer science, a high brown belt in Karate, a terrible fantasy novel I'd written, and few years of Krav Maga, Muay Thai and Taekwondo under my belt (or as my belt). While trying to not get my novel published and not end up in a cubicle I started helping teach at the local Taekwondo school I trained at.

Eight years later I opened my first school, a year-and-a-half later my second.

I have training in over a dozen martial arts, at least half-a-dozen of which I have 1-16 years experience in. I've been teaching since 2004 and running my own martial arts businesses since 2012.

I am always seeking to improve and absorb information from a wide variety of media not only on martial arts technique but communication, business, teaching, parenting, health, fitness, and general self-improvement.

About the lesson

After a brief introduction and a few guidelines about the school, new students jump right in with a week of free classes. Classes are designed with enough structure to help develop discipline but without the over-rigid dogma and tradition that can stifle strictly traditional martial arts.

New students generally get one-on-one or small group training with an instructor to help get them acclimated, then shift into regular class with our relaxed and friendly community.

I have worked with students as from three to seventy-five years old and everything in between. I've trained with high-performance competative athletes and students who spent the last ten years on the couch. Men, women, boys, girls, well-mannered straight-A students and neglected kids taken out of abusive homes.

Most offer free trials or at least let you watch. If you're potentially going to spend several years training, it's worth finding the best fit before you jump in as not all schools and instructors are created equal.

A father and daughter completed their black belt tests after three years of training together 3-4 days a week. When they'd started neither could do a push-up even from their knees, were winded before we finished the warm up, and could barely even attempt most exercises.

The father could barely kick as high as his knees and the daughter was so shy from bullying that it took her almost a month to say "hello" back to me when she came to class.

Three years later they could do any exercise I put before them, kick over their heads, and completed an intense several hour black belt test. The daughter not only began to talk in class, but came to teach in the kids classes.

Best of all, the father told me they barely had a relationship when they first came, but by the time they moved away for a job change they were inseperable.

A few things worth thinking about before reaching out
Do you have any physical limitations they should be aware of? Old injuries, surgeries, or other medical conditions?

What do you want from training - a competative sport? A fun hobby? A challenge? A varied, practical workout? A tradition to be a part of? A close-knit community? A set of effective techniques?

Ask the same question of the instructor - what do they focus on? Are they open to questions about why they do each technique?
