Professional tubist in New England area for 20 years, with experience performing orchestral, band, wind ensemble, brass quintet, and solo literature.
I love creating music with other people - whether it's reading duets outside in the summer with friends or presenting Verdi's Requiem with hundreds of musicians in a concert hall, it's all a great beautiful thing worthy of pursuit.

For a new student, I first talk with them to learn more about them as people and what they are interested in. I also ask about their immediate and long term goals in music. It's important to be on the same page regarding a direction to take. I also like to listen to new students play something they're very comfortable with to gauge the progress they've made up to this point. Then we decide on a course of action to take in order to achieve goals.
I've worked with beginners, middle school, high school, and even retirees looking for fulfillment in a hobby. Each level has it's own challenges.
I would advise a student to hire a teacher who can (or did at a younger age) actually perform at a professional level on their instrument, if at all possible.
A few things worth thinking about before reaching out
Students should think about how much work they are willing and able to do between lessons in order to improve. If the answer is "not much", that's fine, but lessons should be spaced farther apart to allow for the student to do the work.
