About Richard
Richard Brooks has been active as a violinist, conductor and teacher in the Connecticut and Westchester, NY area for over 40 years. With the band “Solstice” he performed at many schools and concert venues between 1976 and 1986 and recorded an album of original music. With his own band, “The Richard Brooks Group” he performed at club venues in Connecticut and New York and was featured at the 1989 New Haven Jazz Festival. He had long tenures conducting The Danbury Community Orchestra, The Cheshire Symphony Orchestra, and The Norwalk Youth Symphony Concert Orchestra, touring Prague, The Czech Republic, Vienna, and Italy with the latter. He has Guest Conducted for school festivals in Connecticut and in Putnam and Westchester counties in New York. In 2013 he conducted members of the Norwalk Youth Symphony and The New Haven Symphony, along with Jay Ungar and Mark O’Connor in a “Concert For Peace” in Newtown, CT to benefit victims of the Sandy Hook school shooting. He taught music many years at The Wooster School in Danbury. He has taught violin at The Gunnery in Washington, CT and privately through Westchester Home Music and Continuo Music at Home. He founded the Brooks-Hartline-Fried String Trio, a jazz group featuring violin, guitar, and bass, in 2019 and continues to freelance on the violin. Music from Richard’s albums “Solstice” (1983), “Alone Amongst Friends” (1992), “Violin Electric” (1998), and “The Essential Collection” (2019) can be heard on YouTube and downloaded at Bandcamp.
I enjoy working with young people and helping them to better understand the art of music and the study of the violin. I find it exhilarating and inspirational when a student makes progress or displays an improved understanding. And I love to see the pride a student takes in themself and the renewed enthusiasm and confidence they exhibit when they recognize their progress.
In addition to a Bachelor degree in Violn Performance from Western Connecticut State University, I have many credits in Music Education, studying the innovative Manhattanville method with one of its creators, Lenore Pogonowski. I also studied string instrument improvisation with "maverick" cellist David Darling. My past teachers were John F. Burnett, a pupil of French virtuoso Ovide Musin, and Eric Lewis, first violinist (retired) and cofounder of the modern Manhattan String Quartet.

I try to determine their goals and their current level, strengths and weaknesses. From there I present a plan for their approval, usually built on learning scales and arpeggios, studying etudes, and learning repertoire at the appropriate degree of their experience.

Richard is a great violin teacher, very personable, enthusiastic and patient. My daughter learned a lot from her lessons with him since Richard was able to adjust to her learning rate and teach her the fundamentals she was missing in the beginning. He built a strong connection with her, challenging and supporting her effectively throughout the lessons.
Mr. Brooks is an awesome teacher. He's very experienced in teaching and will always find a way to improve my techniques. He also emphasizes musicianship beyond practices - we worked on performance preparation, improvisation, and collaboration. I really enjoyed my lessons with Mr. Brooks and he has definitely helped me to become a better musician.
Richard was my violin teacher all through high school. He was able to get me advanced into the Principal Orchestra with the Norwalk Youth Symphony. During my time with him he took a special interest in my personal advancement. He was always professional and kept the lessons entertaining and enjoyable. Ricard is a dedicated teacher who always put his students first. I would recommend him for any level violinist looking to advance their repertoire.
