About Colby

I started learning to play fiddle music as a young boy, my strict teacher and her husband were both state fiddle champions. they taught me old style techniques that have only been passed down orally. As I grew in musical taste, and size, I began to learn classical violin. What I began to see was that there are many fun ways to enjoy the skill of playing violin. Seeing personal benefit beyond the immediate skill is important for all students to identify, and that must start with the teacher.

With a decade of experience, It is my goal to give my students the best of this old world style along with the tried and true suzuki method! I want nothing more than for them to enjoy playing the violin, to do that we will attempt to make happy experiences in learning violin as well as getting at the root of each student's motivation.

Completed TESOL certification. This certification has to do with teaching English to students with no prior experience. The course dives heavily into teaching methods that can be used for a wide variety of applications such as teaching violin.

About the lesson

New students can be challenging. The first thing I do is determine their skill level. This is accomplished by speaking with them about their experience, and hearing them play through some exercises. A student with no previous skill will be taught basics such as how to hold a violin, whereas a student with a few years of training can start learning a concerto from the suzuki method.

I've worked with very young students as well as older students. Some of them have had no experience with music, others have had experience with other instruments, and some students started with a basic knowledge of how to play violin.

I would tell them to find a teacher that isn't tied to the textbook. Each student is different and will need different timeframes for completion, and different focuses. it can be very beneficial when a teacher lets the student choose a song to learn or changes an assignment to better fit the student's needs.

Some family and friends organized a band, we played at multiple venues for 3 consecutive years. It was a very happy time in my musical career, and goals like this are always important for my students to have because I know they can experience the same satisfaction I did after accomplishing this.

A few things worth thinking about before reaching out
They need to remember that the only way to know an answer is to ask. There is never a dumb question when a student has a need. The only thing they need to do is write their questions down before we talk so we can cover them systematically.

One time lessons are priced at $50/Hr. Recurring lessons are $35/Hr. If a lesson goes beyond the agreed time, the cost is an additional $15 for every half hour.
