About Julia Ann
Hi!
I’m Julia Ann (pronounced Jul-yan). It’s a double name with a Southern dialect so it’s kinda like one name. I’m a professionally trained portrait artist, originally from Montgomery, Alabama.
With over fifteen years of experience, I received schooling at Rhode Island School of Design, Auburn University (where I earned a Bachelor of Fine Arts), and trained one-on-one with instructors from New York Academy of Art.
In 2017, I moved to Oakland, California where I currently live and work out of a 500-square-foot backyard cottage with my dog, Hank. I sell portraits all over the country and would love to work with you!
I started teaching as a college student, nearly 10 years ago, to bring in income.

We'll discuss what your comfort/skill level is and what you're interested in painting, and then we'll work together to select an image to paint from. Before the lesson starts, I'll have the image sketched out for you and then we'll walk through it together step by step. I'll give you an overview of how we're going to layer the paint, and I'll do some demo-ing on your painting so that you can see the technique. Then you'll work through each step and I can be as hands on or hands off as you'd like. You can BYO vinyl record(s) to enhance the painting experience! I'll provide the painting supplies.

Julia Ann is a great teacher! She helped me select a design that was doable, but still challenging enough that it pushed me to learn new techniques. I am seriously the least artistic person alive but ended up with a watercolor painting that I am proud of. She offers the right level of asisstance and adapts her lessons to how her student likes to be taught. It was also really fun to hang with Julia Ann and see some of the personal projects she's been working on! Thanks, Julia Ann!
Julia Ann taught me step by step how to paint a pet portrait. I had never used water color before, and it turned out amazing!
The methods she teaches can be replicated for many other projects, so I feel that I can recreate the process at home. I would 100% recommend taking a lesson, they're fun, intimate, and you learn from a great artist.
