About Stephen
I’m Stephen Docker, a violinist and teacher based in Melbourne. I studied violin at the University of Melbourne and the Australian Academy of Music, and over the years I’ve worked as a professional performer in a range of settings, including Melbourne Opera (where I’m currently Associate Concertmaster) and the Victorian State School Spectacular as a string tutor. Earlier in my musical journey I was fortunate to win the Melbourne Symphony Orchestra’s Young Artists Competition in 2002.
Teaching has always been an important part of my work alongside performing. I currently teach violin and string ensembles at Peninsula Grammar, and I enjoy helping students understand how to practice, not just what to play. My aim is to pass on practical skills, musical awareness, and confidence, so students feel supported, capable, and motivated in their own learning.

I believe that every student learns differently, which is why my violin lessons are always tailored to you. Whether you’re a complete beginner, returning to the violin after a break, or working toward exams or performances, I take the time to understand your goals, learning style, and pace.
I focus on building strong technique, musical confidence, and a genuine enjoyment of playing, while providing clear, smart practice routines to help students make the most of their time between lessons.
