My teaching method is casual yet serious and very much focused on the individual. I believe people learn best when they are interested in what they are doing and can see a purpose or have a goal in mind, hence I negotiate topics and art disciplines with my students. I like to work with each individual to develop specific learning goals, expectations and timelines. While there is a big emphasis on skill development in my classes, I also mentor students on how to think and solve visual problems creatively. There is a definite focus on idea generation, development, and the artistic/design process.
It is important to note that all teaching and learning is tailored to suit each individual’s goals, needs, and abilities in a challenging yet FRIENDLY, FUN and SUPPORTIVE environment.
In one-off workshops, the emphasis is on having fun while learning a new skill or producing a finished art, craft or design work.
I enjoy teaching groups (large or small) as well as, one to one, from the very young to the more mature.
I have successfully taught Art, Craft, and Design for 30 years, in a variety of school settings, to students from reception to adult re-entry, (including many special needs students/classes) in the country and city. I have also conducted numerous skills workshops and seminars in the Visual Arts. I am highly qualified (Bachelor and Master's degree in Art Education), I love teaching and am very passionate about Visual Arts and their role in society.
Over the years I have mentored or taught in excess of 7000 students. Many of these students have gone on to become very successful in the visual arts. One student received a full 4-year painting scholarship at ACSA (Adelaide Central School of Art) and is a celebrated practicing artist, 3 x-students run their own art businesses producing community murals, 5 have gone on to become art teachers, 3 are award-winning tattoo artists, another 5 have gone on to become graphic designers and signwriters, and another 4 are working in fashion design or visual merchandising, one is a sought after creative carpenter and one achieved the role of Assistant Professor of Indigenous Archeology at Flinders Uni (in a newspaper article, he directly attributed his success to my mentoring in high school).
My knowledge and practical experience across the visual arts is extremely broad, including textile art (tie-dyeing, machine embroidery, fabric design etc.), painting, drawing, clay work, mosaics, aerosol painting & street art, murals, printmaking, stencilling, silk-screening, sculpture, creative photography, image transfers, papermaking, jewelry, collage, papier-mache, leather craft, mixed media work, creative lettering and font design, creative problem solving, idea generation and development, fashion, product, and graphic design, as well as the Art and Design Process.
I understand the importance of visual literacy in our ever-increasing visual world and how to develop student's skills in visual communication. I have extensive knowledge of Art and colour theory, historical and contemporary artists and art practice, art history, analysis, critique, research and art writing (e.g. practitioner's statements). In addition, I have up to the minute knowledge of the Australian Curriculum and SACE stage 1 and 2 Art & Design requirements.
Students will be expected to supply their own art materials unless otherwise negotiated/stated.
In some instances, students will be able to purchase materials from me or pay an additional fee to have materials included.
Workshops and classes will generally be conducted at my premises or a specified location so that students have access to wet areas, necessary equipment, and resources.
