About Lydia
Who I Am & Why I Want to Teach You
I’m a God-fearing Christian wife and mother of three children living in Brisbane. Sewing and creating with textiles isn’t just a skill for me — it’s how I’ve expressed love, patience, and care for my family for over 20 years.
I’ve had the privilege of teaching Home Economics, Textiles and Fashion Design in Zimbabwe, New Zealand, and Australia. Those years in different classrooms taught me one thing: creativity speaks every language. I love working with people from all multicultural backgrounds because every student brings a new story, style, and purpose to the table.
Why I want to teach you:
I believe everyone deserves the confidence to create something with their own hands. Whether you’re picking up a needle for the first time, or you have a half-finished project in the cupboard that feels “too hard” now, I’m here for you.
I specialize in two things:
1. Starting from scratch – guiding beginners step-by-step until you can make, fit, and finish your own garments and bags.
2. Rescuing abandoned projects – bring in that dress, quilt, or bag you started months ago. We’ll figure out where it went wrong and complete it together, no judgment.
My classroom is patient, encouraging, and faith-filled. I teach with the same care I’d give my own children. My goal isn’t just to teach you stitches — it’s to see you light up when you finish your first piece and say, “I made this.”
If you’re in Brisbane and ready to start or restart your sewing journey, I’d be honored to walk it with you.

My Personal Approach to Teaching Sewing & Fashion Design
I don’t believe in one-size-fits-all lessons. With 20+ years teaching in Brisbane, my approach is simple: meet you where you are, build your confidence, then take you further than you thought possible.
1. Hands-on from day one
You won’t spend weeks just watching me. Beginners start threading the machine and making something real in lesson 1 — a tote bag, cushion, or simple skirt. Advanced students jump straight into pattern drafting, garment construction, or complex patchwork. You learn by doing.
2. Patient, step-by-step guidance
Sewing can feel overwhelming, but I break every skill into clear, manageable steps. No question is “silly”. I’ll show you, guide your hands if needed, and stay with you until it clicks. My students often say “I finally get it” because we slow down where you need it.
3. Skills for real life + real fashion
We don’t just sew for fun. You’ll learn professional techniques used in fashion design studios: fabric selection, accurate cutting, neat finishing, fitting, and design decisions. Whether you want to mend clothes, make bags to sell, or design your own wardrobe, you’ll get practical skills that last.
4. Creative + technical balance
I teach both the art and the craft. We’ll explore color, design, and patchwork creativity, but I’ll also teach you the technical precision that makes garments look professional. That balance is what 20+ years of experience gives you.
5. Your goals drive the lessons
Want to make clothes for your kids? Alter vintage pieces? Start a bag-making side hustle? Tell me your goal and I’ll tailor the lessons. Beginners to advanced — everyone has a custom path in my studio.
Bottom line: My job isn’t just to teach you stitches. It’s to give you the confidence to create, fix, and design anything you can imagine with fabric.
If you’re in Brisbane and ready to start, I’d love to be your teacher. Book a trial lesson and let’s make something beautiful together.
