About Marcella

My relationship with the violin began at the age of six, sparking a lifelong dedication that saw me turn professional by just twelve years old. This early start provided me with a deep, intuitive understanding of the instrument, one that I now pass on to my students. With a Master’s degree in Violin Performance (Scholarship for Excellence) from the Australian Institute of Music, my teaching is backed by decades of rigorous practice and performances.

Having played since early childhood, I place immense value on the principles of aural development. I don't just teach you how to move your fingers; I teach you how to listen, ensuring your intonation and musicality are professional from the start.

From performing in the G20 Orchestra at Borobudur Temple to my 2024 collaboration with Laufey, my career spans the highest levels of classical and modern music. As a founder of Efrata Strings and a teacher, I understand the "big picture" of musical education, helping students navigate everything from AMEB exams to high-pressure auditions.

Whether you are an adult learner starting your own journey or a parent looking for an experienced mentor for your child, I bring a level of professionalism and empathy that only comes from someone who has lived and breathed music for over twenty years. I offer a structured, encouraging environment where we bridge the gap between technical discipline and pure artistic joy.

My approach to teaching is built on the belief that technical mastery and artistic expression should develop hand-in-hand, whether you are picking up the instrument for the first time or preparing for a high-stakes exam. I draw from my international training to create a curriculum that is both disciplined and deeply personal.

I utilize a hybrid pedagogical approach, blending the rigorous foundations of the Russian and Bulgarian schools with modern, ergonomic techniques. For students, this means:
- The "Sound-First" Principle: We focus on developing a rich, resonant tone from day one, ensuring the physical relationship with the violin or viola is relaxed and natural.
- AMEB Strategy: For those on the exam track, I provide comprehensive preparation that includes technical work, sight-reading, and aural training (shout out to Aurell for the inspiration in keeping the ear sharp!).
- Tailored Repertoire: For adult learners, I balance classical foundations with contemporary interests—drawing from my own experiences ranging from the G20 Orchestra to modern collaborations like my project with Laufey.

Lesson Structure & Length
I offer flexible sessions tailored to the student’s age and attention span:
- 30 Minutes ($60): Ideal for younger beginners to maintain focus.
- 45 Minutes ($75): The "sweet spot" for intermediate students or focused AMEB prep.
- 60 Minutes ($110): Recommended for advanced students, adults, and those working on complex concerto repertoire.

Qualifications & Professional Experience
I hold a Master’s degree in Violin Performance from the Australian Institute of Music, where I studied under a scholarship for excellence. My experience is truly global:
- International Mentorship: Studied at the Singapore Violin Festival under world-class masters and collaborated with icons like Sam Haywood.
- Performance Career: From leading with the Sydney Youth Orchestra to performing world premieres by Ananda Sukarlan and founding Efrata Strings.
- Professional Pedagogy: I have been a professional musician since age 12, giving me a unique perspective on the dedication required to excel at every level.

Who These Lessons Are For
I welcome students of all backgrounds at my home studio in Waterloo:
- The Aspiring Professional: Students looking to master AMEB grades or prepare for auditions.
- The Adult Learner: I specialize in teaching adults who are either returning to the instrument or starting a new hobby; I adapt my communication style to suit mature goals.
- The Next Generation: Young beginners who want a fun but structured introduction to string playing.

  • When did you first develop a passion for music and your favourite instrument?

I started learning the violin when I was five years old. It’s hard at first but somewhere along the way it became something I couldn’t imagine living without. The violin has been with me through every stage of my life, and I still find it amazing that four strings can say things words sometimes can’t.
  • Is there a particular type of music or artist that you listen to on a loop without it driving you crazy?

Laufey has definitely been on repeat lately! And I started to listen to Olivia Dean too. But I also love classical music (of course), but my playlists jump between Bach, Debussy, and the occasional sad song at 2 a.m. I like music that tells a story, now I started to listen the other genre outside classical music.
  • Explain to us the most difficult or 'riveting' lesson you could personally give to one of your students.

Probably learning how to enjoy performing instead of just surviving it. Playing the right notes is one thing, but learning how to deal with nerves, communicate with an audience, and actually enjoy being on stage is a whole different challenge. Those are the lessons that stay with you long after you’ve forgotten your scales. The most difficult ones, are transfer students with all the posture & things that need to be fixed. It takes a very long time.
  • What do you think is the most complicated instrument to master and why?

I have to defend my own instrument and say the violin. There’s nowhere to hide! No frets, no keys, just your ears, your hands, and lots of patience. It can be incredibly frustrating at times, but that’s also what makes it so rewarding and of course she’s so beautiful.
  • What are your keys to success?

Be consistent, be curious, and don’t be afraid to sound bad while you’re learning. Progress isn’t about being perfect, it’s about showing up regularly and enjoying the process. I always tell my students that every great musician once sounded like a beginner.
  • Name three musicians you dream of meeting in your favourite bar in the early hours of the morning. Explain why.

    Laufey, Bach, and Janine Jansen.

Laufey because I’d love to hear how she writes music that feels so timeless yet so personal. Bach because… imagine being able to ask him what was actually going through his mind when he wrote all those incredible works (and whether he’d be amused by all of us still obsessing over them centuries later!). And Janine Jansen because I’ve always admired how effortlessly expressive and honest her playing is and she’s my favourite violinist! I’d happily sit there for hours just listening to the three of them talk about music.
  • Provide a valuable anecdote related to your musical journey, or your days at 'music school'.

One thing music school taught me is that everyone feels like they’re not good enough sometimes, nobody is perfect, and you can’t play your pieces perfectly. It will always be different, even the people you admire. Once I realised that, I stopped comparing myself so much and focused on becoming a better musician than I was yesterday. I don’t have much performance anxiety, and I can actually enjoy my hours of daily practice. That mindset has helped me far more than chasing perfection ever did.
  • What are the little touches that make you a Superprof in music?

I genuinely care about my students. I celebrate the little wins, I’m patient when things get tricky, and I adapt my teaching to each person instead of expecting everyone to learn the same way. I also perform professionally, so I can share real-life experiences from concerts, auditions, and the music industry. Most importantly, I want my students to leave every lesson feeling excited to pick up their instrument again.
