About Saria

Writing isn’t just something I teach—it’s a craft I’ve studied, practiced, and helped others develop across many contexts. With a BA in English and Mass Communication, an MFA in Writing, and a PhD in Cultural Studies, I bring over 15 years of experience in writing, editing, and teaching at the university level.

I’ve worked as a journalist, an editor, and an academic, and I’ve supported students at every stage—from first-year college writers to doctoral candidates and industry professionals. During my doctoral studies, I launched a writing-focused tutoring and coaching practice, which allowed me to work one-on-one with students in a more personalized, impactful way than traditional classrooms often allow. Since then, I’ve continued to grow that practice, focusing on writing instruction that is both rigorous and supportive.

As a published writer myself, I understand the challenges of producing clear, compelling work for diverse audiences. My passion lies in the power of language—how we shape ideas, build arguments, and tell stories that matter. That passion drives everything I do as a professor, tutor, and coach.

I believe that writing is a skill anyone can improve with the right support, and I work to create a space where students feel empowered, not intimidated. My sessions are tailored, focused, and encouraging. I guide students through everything from brainstorming to revision, and I always provide honest, constructive feedback. I also bring an editor’s eye to every session, helping students sharpen their voice, organize their ideas, and meet academic or professional standards.

Whether you're writing a research paper, developing a thesis, or struggling with clarity and structure, I offer the guidance of someone who not only teaches writing—but is deeply committed to it.

As an educator with a PhD in Cultural Studies and a prior career as a journalist and editor, my teaching approach is rooted in clarity, empathy, and empowerment. I focus on helping students find their own voice, refine their ideas, and communicate effectively—whether they’re working on a college essay, dissertation, or creative writing.

Teaching Methods & Techniques

I tailor my teaching to students' specific needs, goals, and learning styles. For academic writing, I emphasize structure, argumentation, and clarity. For research-based work, I guide students through the full process—from refining a research question to organizing literature reviews and analyzing qualitative data. I also offer hands-on editing support (if desired) to help polish drafts.

My technique is highly interactive: we break down writing goals, walk through examples, and revise collaboratively. I often use scaffolding—starting with manageable tasks and building up to complex writing projects.

A typical session might include:

A quick check-in to set goals and assess progress

Reviewing a current piece of writing or outlining a new one

Live feedback and collaborative editing or brainstorming

Setting writing targets or exercises to work on between sessions

I also provide resources (like style guides or writing frameworks) to support independent learning.

What Sets Me Apart

I bring a rare combination of academic expertise, editorial experience, and real-world writing practice. Having worked as a journalist and editor, I’m attuned to the importance of clear, impactful communication. My feedback is always constructive, honest, and supportive—and I genuinely love helping people develop confidence in their writing.

My lessons are ideal for:

College students who want top grades on essays, research papers, or personal statements.

Grad students writing theses, dissertations, or journal submissions.

PhD candidates who need next-level writing, editing, and structure help.

Professionals working on articles, grant proposals, resumes, or anything that needs polish and impact.

Non-native English speakers at advanced levels needing help sounding fluent and academic.
