About Chris
My name is Chris Hoevel and I have been mentoring and working with youth since I was 16 years old, which is about when I knew I wanted to become a teacher. I pursued this love of teaching into the University of Missouri where I obtained my undergraduate degree in education and master's in curriculum and instruction. I spent 11 years teaching A.P. physics 1 and 2 at Battle Mountain High School in Vail, Colorado. At the same time obtaining my second master's in school administration. I am now teaching 8th grade science at Alliance Charter School in Watts, LA. I have tutored students from 8th to 12th grade for 8 years. I have successfully privately tutored over 50 students helping them in a range from improving A.P. test scores, studying for the ACT / SAT or just making improvements in their own classes.

I am an inquiry-based tutor, I love to get to the root of students' misconceptions by digging into past work and asking them questions to gauge understanding. This allows me to make a connection to them and the content as a learner. It is most effective for me to use where they are and build on that structure. I make extremely powerful connections to content with my students because of this and this has helped me become an excellent classroom teacher and tutor. I start by warming the student up with a challenge from the content we are working on, usually a tougher question. I then work through any work the student currently has, then I make experimental questions using PhET or other application simulations I have access to connect to their learning. I can tutor a range of students, from 6th grade science and math up to 11th and 12th grade A.P. physics 1+2. Classes I have taught for 10 years.
