About Sarah-Athina
I am a freelance fine artist currently undergoing a masters degree at the Royal college of Art.
I have some experience in putting together drawing workshops, after leading some at the British Museum for the Prints and Drawings department.
In the last two years I have also started curating and hosting events called "Four hands meet" centred around the performative aspect of drawing.
The act of drawing has been so central in my practice and thought process, that over the years I was able to depart from the academic teaching of drawing and the general idea that students need to know the technic in order to do beautiful drawings.
Technic is not a set of fixed and general rules, it is rather a set of personal and unique rules that shift and need to adapt from a person to another.

Art has been in my life as far as my earliest memory stretches, and across the years I went through many different kinds of methodologies.
These enriching experiences allowed me to see what resonated with students - and myself - and what became out of date and sometimes even paralysing.
With drawing, sometimes come a lot of expectations, and this alone can be enough to tense the hand as well as the mind. My experience with students has taught me that drawings are often (and sadly) doomed to be "ugly" because it does not replicate reality.
My approach of drawing lessons is based on the fact that the "flaws" of a drawing are actually what builds its strength, singularity and charm.
One's line is like one's handwriting, it is not something that can be controlled, it is on the contrary something to embrace as a unique trait.
The lessons would comprise of fun exercises to loosen the muscles of the hand and activate the right side of our brain, but also a few minutes to look at various artist's drawings and sketches. This helps deepen the understanding of the act and state of drawing instead of solely focusing on technic.
