About Kalaichelvi
Hi, You can read my qualifications and see my picture - yes I have a lot of experience! I have been lucky that my 38 experience has been both varied and excellent, whilst also managing to be broad (in my field) and deep. When I took up lecturing I won the position from many PhD applicants, not only for my academic qualifications but because I was a chartered engineer (one of the interviewers had been an IStructE Part 3 examiner and remembered my exam answer - it made an impression) with, by then, 8 years great experience. It was my wish to teach the hands-on Design and Construction subjects that led me to apply to South Bank over the more traditional (and excellent) universities I had graduated from myself (Southampton with a first class BSc (Hons) in civil engineering 1983 and MSc DIC at Imperial College 1986). I left with proof that our graduates hit the ground running in their first jobs and am always pleased when I meet and even have the pleasure of working with some of my ex-students in industry today. I am told that I have the ability to make things which appear complex, simple. I have even explained the principles of certain design equations to those writing books on design! Having a first principle approach to things also helps me stay at the leading edge and why I was Technical Director of Special Services at a tier 1 consultancy. I believe technical excellence is still the backbone of a good engineer and I also believe there are soft skills required to complement these and make you a great engineer - you need to be an effective communicator. Putting myself on here to offer tuition is part of my continuing efforts to help and influence the engineers of the future.

My approach is to help you understand the basis of design, not just the rote learning of it - this way you can develop critical thinking to take that next step. When I lectured post Chartership, as well as teaching Design and Construction to undergraduates and on postgraduate structures modules for civil/structural engineers, I created modules called 'The Language of Structures' and 'Structural Systems' for undergraduate and PGDip Architecture students at South Bank. There is no one size fits to help people understand structures and their design. Good design is my passion; including the resilience approach to design which we must adopt for reliability and sustainability. In addition to my students, many of whom are in prominent positions at tier 1 engineering consultants and contractors, I have trained and mentored many engineers over my professional life and continue to mentor engineers in senior technical and management positions. My tutorials are for:- 1. anyone learning civil engineering design or construction using the typical construction materials- typically at technical diploma, under or post-graduate level. After an initial chat, if agreed to go forward, the tutorials will typically last for an hour or an hour and a half - student's preference. 2. anyone wanting to take and pass the IStructE Part 3 exam. After an initial chat, if agreed, there will be a standard structure to this package - which you can pick and mix. First session - the part 3 exam requirements and techniques Optional follow on work - review of practice papers

I have known Chelvi since many years and I had the pleasure of working with her for a couple of years. She is no doubt one of the most knowledgeable civil/structural engineers I came across during my 18 year career in the construction industry. She has a huge experience on a variety of challenging building and major infrastructure projects and I remember she would never be afraid of stepping outside her comfort zone; this attitude allowed her to keep learning every day and never be remote from the technical. She is a natural when it comes to mentor and lecturing others, this is not just because she is an experienced, great engineer, it is also because she is passionate about sharing her knowledge and contributing to the growth of new engineers. I would recommend Chelvi as a tutor to whoever wants to upskill in the field of structural design at any level, not just by being taught but also by being inspired. Giovanna (Technical Principal)
I have worked with Kalaichelvi for around 14 years. Over that time she has taught and mentored me in structural design on Crossrail tunnel portals, London Underground mid-tunnel vent shaft upgrades and other civil infrastructure projects.
As well as in structural design, Kalaichelvi has been a general mentor in leadership - primarily by her impressive example. Alongside teaching and mentoring in the workplace, Kalaichelvi has always been there to give me pastoral support - sometimes vital in a design office, which can be a stressful environment.
Kalaichelvi's style was to share her own knowledge and experience, but not to push that - and instead to steer so that I would work things out for myself to truly learn. I wouldn't be where I am today without her.
I highly recommend Kalaichelvi as a tutor, mentor and coach in engineering and leadership.View more recommendations
