About Helena

- What kind of experience do you have? I am principal flute and piccolo at the Royal Northern Sinfonia at the Sage in Gateshead. I worked for many years as a freelance flautist with major London orchestras as well as with those across the UK. I was also professor of flute at the Lady Eleanor Holles School for girls during my time in London where I guided many students through ABRSM exams and beyond. My lessons are engaging and fun and I try to vary my approach and teaching style to suit each student. After my studies at the Royal Academy of Music, I spent a year in Bordeaux, France, studying, teaching and playing. I freelanced with various orchestras across the UK including the Halle Orchestra, Philharmonia, BBC Concert Orchestra, BBC Scottish Symphony Orchestra and the RPO and Royal Opera House. My orchestral work has taken me to countries across Europe and further afield, including tours to South Korea and Japan. I have performed in venues including the Notre Dame in Paris, the Royal Festival Hall and the Royal Albert Hall. Competition successes include winning the Royal Academy of Music Flute Competition when I was a student. I have 10 years private teaching experience and have worked with English Touring Opera, Wigmore Hall Learning and Open Academy delivering music workshops for the community across the UK. About the lesson

My lessons are engaging and fun and I try to vary my approach and teaching style to suit each student. - Which subject(s) do you teach? I teach the flute and piccolo. I also teach piano up to grade 5 level and am very happy to combine the two in my lessons. - Tell me about your qualifications. I have a first-class degree from the Royal Academy of Music as well as an LRAM teaching qualification. - How much do you charge? £50 per hour, £25 per half hour. - Where do you teach? At home in Jesmond. You can come to my house for lessons or I will travel to you depending on how far away it is. - When are you available? I'm flexible. It doesn't have to be the same time each week but Mondays and Tuesdays are my best days. I am happy to work around a busy schedule. I am also happy to offer lessons every two weeks or every month if preferred. If a student needs to cancel a lesson, I ask that they give 24 hours' notice. - Which ages and levels do you teach? I love to teach all different ages and levels! - Which qualifications do you prepare your students for? I generally use the ABRSM syllabus but am familiar with the other examination bodies as well. - Do you have a personal message for students? Learning an instrument can be the start of a truly exciting journey and a wonderful way to challenge yourself. I encourage my students to get out there and go to concerts, give your ears a treat and allow yourself to be inspired. This will feed your development as a musician and will help you find your unique musical voice. You would never find a footballer who knows all the technique required to play but has never actually watched a match? Join ensembles, find like-minded people and have fun playing together!!
