I would have planned lessons which would include grammar and fill in the blanks to help the individual get the hang of the language. Have them solve problems on their own after giving them direction and explanation (the lessons). I would also try to get to know what the child has previously learned by looking at their past work. My lessons would not only focus on grammar, but rotate between Reading, Writing, Speaking, etc. (Based on what they have learned)
