About Deborah
During this academic year, as part of my year abroad at university, I have been a language assistant at a French-speaking school. The skills I picked up teaching English are transferable to teaching French. During my time in Belgium I learned a lot about the natural ways of talking French and honed my French skills.
I also French once a week for three years with a friend who had lived in France for a while. This was good experience in terms of giving me a good accent and conversational skills, and I feel that I am able to use my experience in this to provide a good standard of tutoring.
I have been tutoring people since 2015, this has however been in Maths and English, not French. I am now at a level where a feel that I am confident I will be able to teach French to a good degree.
Last year I tutored two girls in Maths. I was patient and encouraging and taught them a lot, their level in maths improved massively over this period.
In 2015-16, when I was in year 12, I tutored two year 11 students for their Maths GCSEs through my school. I worked through the test papers the school provided with them, but also made up my own questions and wrote explanation sheets in the topics that they were struggling most on. They both got Bs, much better than their target grades.
In 2017, I worked for Kumon. I tutored children between 4-16 in varying difficulties of Maths and English. I helped them work through the sheets that they were given, patiently explained things that they did not understand, and tried to ask questions which would allow them to find the right answers by themselves.
This is the experience I have in tutoring/teaching. All other experience in schools with children/teenagers, and in other jobs can be found on my CV below.

I am a university student studying French. I was an English Assistant at a Belgian school from September until last week (schools closed due to Coronavirus so I came back to England) so I have some language teaching experience. I have also been a Maths tutor before. I will give French lessons to people of any age, from complete beginners to A-Level.
We will focus mostly on the areas that you feel you need to improve, either reading, writing, listening or speaking. However I aim to cover all four areas in each lesson. My lessons would be flexible and tailored to your specific needs and level of French.
I will give you vocabulary, and help you to think of similarities between the two languages and tricks to remember them. I will also explain grammar slowly and give examples of its usage to make sure you understand - the complexity of this will be suited to your level. In terms of reading skills I will set translation and comprehension tasks, which be based on the vocabulary looked at. The writing tasks will also be based on the key vocabulary and will vary depending on the level that you are at. In terms of speaking I am very happy for you to pick a topic and for us to just speak to each other for an hour, if that is where you feel you need to improve. Alternatively, we can create role plays based on the vocabulary learned that week. I am able to help you improve your accent and explain the differences in pronunciation between French and English words. For listening, we can look at youtubers, songs, news reports and more - all, of course will be tailored to your level of french. Depending on how long they are we will first listen without subtitles, and then with. As this is useful for picking up sounds in the language, and also matching the sounds to how they are spelled.
I am a patient and encouraging person and will go as quickly or as slowly as you want me to. When speaking french I will encourage you to try to explain the word that you are looking for in French, rather than just telling you the word (which of course I will do afterwards), as being able to work round gaps in language knowledge is very important.
