When learning a language, whether it is our mother tongue, or a second or third language, the role of Listening cannot be underestimated. The first five years of our life are spent listening, watching and learning, in our first language. In my lessons, a huge part of the initial steps is communication, regardless of inaccuracies, as the biggest barrier can be a lack of confidence. My students feel at ease and have fun. As youngsters, we are constantly revising! We hear these sounds over and over again. As babies, we are not even paying particular attention however, our brain is absorbing these sounds and is storing them. We are all capable of learning another language. We don't even need to be particularly clever. We just need time and effort. A huge amount of repetition is required. A baby lying in a cot will be repeatedly hearing the same words and sounds. Just listening is a hugely important part of development of a new language. As a result of continual listening, we can understand and recognise a language before we actually learn to speak it. (This is of course the case with a toddler learning to speak in that they have heard these sounds over and over again) We listen and then we try to speak. In fact, it is said that by the age of 8 months, babies have acquired all words. Their brain has stored the sounds. How do we get these words and sounds into our brain? Just by listening! Our brain is a collector. It is an organiser that stores words and patterns. The challenge arises when we start learning a new language. Students often claim that they can learn a language by means of simply reading a dictionary, using google translate or online apps, literally just reading the words and trying to (and failing) remember them. This of course is not possible. Can we become expert rugby players by simply reading a book about rugby tactics? No. We need to build muscles and strength and work on physical fitness. Our brain is one of the most important muscles as each time we listen to new words, neurons in our brain are making a connection and are storing the sound. Students will claim that the new language is spoken too fast. This is not the case. The reality is that when initially exposed to the sounds of a new language, we are functioning like bad internet connections. Francophones and Hispanophones are NOT speaking too fast, our brains are going too slow! When hearing a new language, we need to build new neuron tissue to be able to follow a new language. Within a second language classroom at school, it takes only 2 minutes to adapt to a new language and its sounds. What is then crucial is that we are frequently exposed to those sounds. For the majority of students, a second language will be learned outside of the country of the language's origin. Hence, in our daily lives we are not as exposed to the second language as we were when we were growing up surrounded by our first language. Considering this, listening exercises are crucial. High frequency of exposure to the spoken sound of a new language imperative. Teaching a second language using the immersion system whereby all lessons are taught in the target language, is certainly one of the most effective methods of teaching a second language outside of its country of origin. If this is not possible (due to discipline issues etc) a second language should be taught using as much of the target language as possible for optimum exposure to the new sounds and words. Outside of the classroom, students should take responsibility for their learning of their new language by listening to as much of the language as possible through the medium of internet radio or TV stations. Five minutes of listening to the news in French or Spanish, provides the student at least 80% of what they will have learned in lesson times in school. The benefits of an intense, hour-long one on one session (whether being taught Spanish, French, English as a Second Language or being tutored in Literacy and Numeracy) are: Students have my constant attention. Students can contribute more. Their strengths and weaknesses are addressed more consistently and fully without the competition of other students for the teacher’s time. They can become better learners through learner training with their teacher. There are less time constraints so they can go at their own pace and not feel pressured by the progress of other students. Low stress environment frees students from the fear of failure. Ability to personalise conversations and assignments. High quality interaction where students feel heard. Avoids overstimulation and eliminates many distractions. My pedagogical philosophy is ultimately to provide an environment where students of all ages can learn at their own pace, in their own style, whilst having fun.
