About Gillian

Hey! I'm Gillian, originally from Calgary, Canada, and now based in beautiful Kiama NSW on a Working Holiday Visa. I have an Honors degree in Medical Sciences and about 5 years of tutoring experience across all ages and levels. When I'm not tutoring, you'll probably find me surfing, doing yoga, or working in one of the local restaurants.

I got into tutoring almost by accident during COVID when a few families in my neighborhood needed help, and I quickly realized I loved it. There's something really satisfying about watching someone go from "I literally don't understand anything" to acing a topic they used to dread. Five years later, I'm still very passionate about teaching.

I'm easy to talk to, and I bring a lot of energy to my sessions. I want my students to actually look forward to our time together and not dread it! Science can be really fun when someone breaks it down in a way that makes sense, and that's exactly what I'm here to do. I'd love to share that enthusiasm with your kid (or with you, if you're a uni student trying to survive first-year bio).

About the lesson

I've been tutoring kids and teens for about 5 years now, and the thing I've learned is that no two students click with the same approach. Some people need to draw it out to understand it. Others need to talk it through out loud.

My style is pretty relaxed and upbeat. I want my students to feel comfortable enough to say "I have no idea what's going on" without feeling embarrassed, because that's usually where the real learning starts. I use a lot of visuals, diagrams, color-coding, and the occasional game or quiz to keep things interesting, especially for content-heavy subjects like biology where there's a lot to memorize.

A typical session is about an hour. I usually start by checking in on what's been happening at school or uni, then we work through whatever's causing the most confusion. I like to leave the last few minutes for a quick recap or a practice question so my student walks away feeling like something actually clicked.

I have an Honors Bachelor of Medical Sciences from Western University in Canada (GPA 3.9), so biology and chemistry are genuinely my thing, not just subjects I scraped through. I am starting medical school in a couple months and happy to help out my community in Australia before I begin.

I tutor high school students from Year 7 right through to HSC, as well as first-year uni students who need help with introductory bio or chem courses.
