About Alex
Hello! I'm Alex, a mechanical engineering graduate and full-time tutor, and I think that the best way to teach is to make a connection with students and find out how they learn best. I break down subjects to help understanding, provide learning resources, and teach kids to work better by themselves, so that they can tackle their school homework better, learn better in class, and revise better. This can include setting homework between sessions. I can teach exam technique, revision practices, and hopefully increase learning motivation and self-confidence. The resources I'll use include textbooks, recommended reading, online videos and my personal revision notes as well as ones the student and I will create together. Every student is different in how they learn and tackle exams, I try to find out what each student needs to understand the fundamental core of the subject. I've tutored for 2 years now, and have taught students of varying ages from year 13 down to year 5 in one-off maths lessons. I`m currently teaching a regular student requiring catch up in preparation for her 11+ exams. I've also worked as a teacher's assistant in a private school in Oxford briefly during my university career. Here I worked in the Maths department, teaching kids from year 9 to year 11. I am very flexible, and can work whenever suits the student best. I’ve known Alex for over 3 years. From the beginning of our friendship, it’s been clear to me that he is one of the most enthusiastic and engaging people I know. Within an hour of first meeting him, he had already offered to spend his day off work helping my friend (another perfect stranger to him) to move house. I’ve since learnt this is typical of Alex - doing things for others, whether to help or just to make them happy, is simply second nature to him.
His enthusiasm is incredibly infectious and he has a way of taking people along with him. I’ve found myself interested in things like bike polo and excel spreadsheets - things I would definitely have no natural aptitude or inclination for, but have been drawn into by his sheer passion. He works hard to reach out to friends and family and is known for being the central figure in organising events and bringing people together whether it’s through dinner parties, games nights or gigs.
He’s also someone who delights in optimising things - where others will accept a status quo or subpar situation, Alex is always looking for ways to improve. If he can figure out a way to 3D print, model, build or code something, he will. He’s hardworking and proactive, and always keen to get involved. My two children (12 and 16 years old) have been tutored by Alex in the past there months. I contacted Alex because my 12 years old son was struggling with certain aspects of maths and lacked confidence. Alex has an easy to learn, fun and communicative approach in teaching Maths that appeals to a young Year 7 boy. My son was enthusiastic since the first lesson, him and Alex just clicked immediately, he said that finally he gets Maths and actually he finds it funny. My 16 years old daughter started to be tutored by Alex just after my son to prepare her for Maths GCSE exams and she too found that Alex is able to communicate difficult maths concepts in an easy way which help her understanding and learning, In both kids I noticed an instant change, my son not only enjoys one of the subject he mostly hated, but he’s improving rapidly and he’s achieving good grades. My daughter’s confidence in Maths is boosted and thanks to Alex's patience and hard work she’s preparing well for her GSCE exams. Since the COVID crisis, Alex is successfully tutoring online both children via an online platform which work very well and kids enjoy. I have no reservation in recommending Alex as a tutor as he’s working hard, with passion and patience with both of my kids to get to the best possible results.
