About Selamawit

Hi! I’m a Virginia Tech graduate who now works for the United Nations, and I’ve turned a lifelong love of math into a passion for helping others succeed. Math has always been a big part of my life—thanks to my dad, who’s loved it just as much as I do. From an early age, I found joy in solving problems, spotting patterns, and breaking down challenges into manageable steps. Over time, I realized something important: sometimes the concepts that seem “simple” are the ones that cause the most frustration. And that’s okay—because that’s exactly where I can help. I know what it’s like to feel stuck on a problem and think, “I should get this by now.” That’s why I approach tutoring with patience, empathy, and a clear step-by-step method that removes the stress and builds confidence. In my current role in client services, communication and active listening are key, and I bring those same skills into my tutoring sessions. I take the time to understand how each student thinks so I can explain topics in a way that actually clicks—whether you’re working through algebra, geometry, pre-calculus, or just brushing up on the basics. My goal is not just to help you get the right answer, but to ensure you understand why it’s right. When math starts making sense, it becomes less of a hurdle and more of a skill you can rely on for life.

About the lesson

My approach is simple: make math fun and as unintimidating as possible. I believe that when students feel relaxed, supported, and even entertained, they’re more willing to try, make mistakes, and ultimately succeed.

Teaching Method & Techniques:
I use clear, step-by-step explanations, real-life examples, and interactive activities to make concepts easier to understand and remember. If one method doesn’t click, I’ll try another—using visuals, stories, or even games—until it does. My sessions are lively, encouraging, and always tailored to each student’s learning style.

Typical Lesson Plan:
We’ll begin by reviewing any homework or areas of difficulty. Then we’ll explore the day’s topic using hands-on methods—whether that’s solving problems together, drawing visuals, or using math games to reinforce understanding. We’ll finish with a quick recap so your child leaves feeling confident and proud.

I understand that even the “simple” stuff can be challenging. My patience, positive energy, and ability to explain things in multiple ways help students feel safe to ask questions and excited to learn.
