About Lehui
About me
I grew up speaking Mandarin, and I've spent the last four years studying in London. That combination is really what I bring to teaching. I know the language from the inside, and I also know what it's like to sit in a British classroom and work in a second language, so I have a good sense of where English-speaking students get stuck and why.
I completed my BSc in Philosophy, Politics and Economics at King's College London, and I'm now finishing an MSc in China and Globalisation, also at King's. Alongside my degrees I've competed in formal Mandarin debating and worked as a writer and editor of Chinese-language content, so I'm equally comfortable with everyday conversation and with the more formal written Chinese that GCSE papers ask for.
For two years I led the Cultural Development Department of the KCL Chinese Students and Scholars Association, where I organised talks and events for audiences of several hundred students, most of whom were new to Chinese language and culture. Making Chinese feel approachable rather than intimidating is something I've had a lot of practice at.
I'm organised and I prepare properly for every lesson. Students can expect a clear plan for what we're working towards, honest feedback on where they actually stand, and replies to messages within a day. If you'd like to talk through what your child needs before booking, I'm very happy to have that conversation first.

My approach:
Most students who come to me for GCSE Mandarin are in one of two situations, and they need quite different things.
Some are starting from scratch, often the only language they've picked up outside French or Spanish. With them I spend real time on tones at the beginning, because getting them wrong early is hard to unlearn later. We build up through pinyin first, then characters, and I teach characters by their components rather than as shapes to memorise. Once you can see that 河, 湖 and 海 all share the water radical, a few hundred characters stop feeling like a wall.
Others already speak Mandarin at home but have never written it, and are sitting the GCSE because they can talk. They usually lose marks in exactly the same places: character writing, formal register, and the structure the mark scheme expects. With them I skip the basics entirely and work straight from past papers.
Either way, we speak Mandarin in every lesson from the first one, even if it's only a few sentences at the start. I'd rather a student make mistakes out loud than sit silently getting things right in their head.
Closer to exams I work directly from the specification, whichever board the school uses. The speaking exam in particular rewards preparation, and the role play and photo card are very learnable once you know what the examiner is listening for.
Lesson length:
An hour is standard and suits most students. I offer 90 minutes in the run-up to exams for past paper work, and 45 minutes for younger or beginner students, since concentration on a new writing system tends to run out before the clock does.
Who my lessons are for:
Mainly GCSE students in Years 10 and 11, including both complete beginners and heritage speakers who need exam technique rather than language. I also teach Years 7 to 9 building toward GCSE, and adult beginners who want conversational Mandarin without an exam at the end.
I teach online and can work with students anywhere in the UK.
Recommendations
Recommendations come from relatives, friends and acquaintances of the teacher
I tutor Mandarin and Cantonese myself, so when I recommend another language tutor I'm doing it with a fairly clear idea of what the job actually involves. What stands out is the precision of her Mandarin. She's competed in formal Chinese debating and worked as an editor of Chinese-language content, which is a level of control over register and structure that a lot of native speakers never develop. For a GCSE student that matters, because the writing and speaking papers are marked on exactly that. She's also genuinely good at explaining. And she's organised and reliable, which parents care about more than they let on. I'd recommend her to anyone looking for Mandarin tuition, particularly at GCSE level.
