About Jo
I have over forty five years experience in Meditation and teaching Meditation to people from all walks of life, all ages. I started meditating as a young child and have practised my style of meditation ever since. Since the 1970's I have been further guided in meditation by a number of meditation teachers and Gurus. I am not an initiate into any specific tradition.
I can offer expert guidance for all, from beginners to advanced.
My meditation journey began when I was 6 years old. With only the slightest information available to me, I began a simple but powerful mantra meditation practice. As a small child, I had little idea of the significance or far reaching effects of this practice, but I began to yearn for more.
When I was 12 years old my father gave me a book of the Upanishads, which lit a fire in my mind and life. During my teens I sought out and studied many interpretations, translations and commentaries on key Yoga texts, and these gave me more information and context for my meditation practice. I studied the works of various teachers and authentic texts on yoga, deepening my meditation practice by applying the lessons from these authoritative sources.
At the age of 17, I began to study basic Sanskrit from some of these books. This expansion of my knowledge started to give me a deeper conceptual understanding of key Yoga texts, the inside view of the ‘untranslatables’. After several years of applying myself both to private study and the study of Sanskrit texts during meditation retreats, I went on to study the Sanskrit language and its literature at two Australian universities, for a total of four years.
My many encounters with meditation teachers and Hindu spiritual traditions has profoundly deepened my understanding of meditation, my own meditation practice and my knowledge of the ancient science that is Yoga. When I first encountered and started teaching the Yoga Sutras of Patañjali, I quickly came to realise that though practicing Ashtanga Yoga (The authentic 8 Limbs of Yoga), meditation not only leads to a deepened spiritual awareness and experience, enhances mental capacity, mood, self awareness, self esteem, and general physical health, but enables the practitioner to heal from significant pain and trauma. I have been teaching Meditation to individuals and groups of students intermittently since 1983.

My teaching is based on Traditional Yoga Meditation, primarily on the Yoga Sutras of Patañjali, the foremost authority in Yoga Meditation. I teach silent meditation, mantra meditation, japa (chanting mantra on a 108 bead mala), pranayama (breathwork) and 2 other styles of meditation.
Other than during initial training, I do not do guided meditations or 'mindfulness' meditation, my tradition is much deeper than these and is proven by thousands of years of experience.
In this course students will learn:
• Preliminary exercises to prepare the body and mind for the practice of meditation
• Awareness exercises to bring you into deep connection with your body.
• Basic breathing techniques to help you relax instantly.
• How to clear the mind and feed the subtle body through Pranayama (breathwork).
• Use of Mudras (hand gestures) to set attitudes and harmonise the mind and body.
• Traditional yogic meditation techniques to connect a clear pathway to the inner self.
• An introduction to Mantra meditation and chanting.
• An introduction to Japa (voiced or silent mantra repetition using a 108 bead Mala).
• Guidance on how to how to set up your own Meditation space at home.
Meditation is a very powerful practice which can help you to grow as a person, slow down and manage the activity in your mind, gradually connect mind and body, and gain a degree of control over various physical and mental processes. This can enhance your life on a number of different levels:
Experience a state of calm, activate and use this in any pressured situation.
Improve your ability to make rational decisions in high stress situations.
Elevate your mood to a new level of contentment.
Help you to get better focussed and organised.
Increase your productivity.
Improve your emotional health, confidence and self image.
Enhance your relationships with others.
With longer term, consistent and regular practice, meditation can have a profound positive effect on health:
Lower an elevated heart rate at, safely, quickly and effectively.
Lower blood pressure, and gain control over it.
Help to control and manage asthma.
