About Geoffrey
As a teacher, I really enjoy enabling students to take a design from concept to realisation, delving into all the ideas and options that are available to them throughout that process. I believe that the ability to conceptualise and make garments, homewares and any other fabric-based creations from scratch is a much more sustainable and rewarding process than purchasing new products.
I have had a long-standing career as a sewer, designer and teacher, and am happy to provide prospective students with references to my previous work, and testimonials from previous students and clients.

I understand that people's interest in taking up sewing lessons is a very individual process. Whether you are an absolute beginner or you have some experience in design/sewing and want to expand your abilities, my classes are catered to your individual interests. This can include:
- Machine and hand sewing techniques
- Pattern drafting (from existing garments or from scratch)
- Fabric selection and finishing
- Design creation process
Classes can range from 1-2 hours in length (negotiable), and I am able to teach from my home in Preston (Melbourne), or to travel within the Melbourne metropolitan area. I am able to transport a domestic sewing and overlocking machine to students' homes/studios if you do not have one.
My classes are open to students of any age and level of experience.
My professional experience:
I undertook my training in fashion design at Central St. Martins School of design (London), and costume design at the Victorian College of the Arts (Melbourne). I therefore am able to teach to the very technical design processes of fashion design, as well as the more explorative/experimental approach of costume design.
As well as individual/group design teaching, I have worked as a sewer/designer for 10+ years, working for performing arts companies such as The Australian Ballet, Lucy Guerin Inc, Chambermade Opera and BalletLab.
