About Bruce
I'm a UCC genetics graduate with an MSc from Oxford, working full time as a research scientist. I've tutored biology since 2018.
In Oxford, I won the Micromanipulation Prize in my MSc. Currently an Applications Scientist at Syndex Bio, previously a Developmental Scientist at Oxford Nanopore Technologies preparing and sequencing human DNA. Tutoring since 2018, and I came through the Irish system myself. Achieving a H1 in my own Biology Leaving cert.

How I teach
Biology looks like a memory subject and it isn't quite. Marks go missing because an answer is roughly right but not in the words the marking scheme wants, so I teach from marking schemes from the first lesson.
Every lesson runs the same way: quick recall of last week, new content taught through a real exam question, then the student explains it back with the notes closed. Past papers start early rather than in April, because by sixth year most students know the biology and don't know the paper.
I also help with the Biology in Practice Investigation, now 40% of the Leaving Cert. Designing experiments, analyzing data and writing them up is my day job.
Lesson length
One hour weekly. Ninety minutes for sixth years near the exams or working on the investigation.
